I'm after some cast iron bar of 3/8 dia to tap to 3/8 UNC to plug the head studs on my K1200 conversion. Has anybody got some lying about after their conversion?

My only other option is to turn down some bar of around 25mm down to 3/8".

Cheers

In terms of thermal expansion steel should be fine. I doubt it would make a difference.

I feel its probably going to be a case of whats technically correct vs what works

But well. The metal in threaded bars ive found is generally shite.

It's readily available on ebay ?

Cant imagine the material quality of cheap steel threaded rod being any worse than cast iron ?

3/8" cast iron bar is available on ebay? Link?

I certainly can't find any. The closest is 25mm dia which needs turning down.

I never said cast iron. I said basic plain steel threaded rod.

Go on then has anyone used steel to plug their blocks? What do the companies that offer the conversions use?

Has anyone just cut down a standard head stud to pug the block, or are they too hard and will cause the drill bit to wander? Tempted to just use steel bar to plug my block otherwise.

I've been trying to find some cast iron without success here in Oz too. Seems like it's going to have to be turned down from a larger diameter.

Edit: I'll be using steel for all water & oil ways, and for the 4 studs that don't overlap the new BMW ones. Cast Iron (once I find some) for the two end studs that do overlap the new ones.

Interesting Jim - so just to clarify, you use steel to block the two end studs that do overlap the new ones? If so, does that mean that the wandering drill worry is not really an issue?

Hope that is the case, it will save a lot of d!cking around trying to find and then machine & thread cast iron.

That was my thought too Joe. Mill the holes and an end mill on a rigid milling machine is unlikely to wander if you take it steady.

If you centre drill them and go down with a slot drill you should be fine.

I mill the holes with a 8mm endmill, and do two finish cuts to make sure the whole is round

I ended up milling an old camshaft, for the 5 holes that need to drill, all the other use brass.
