Well I thought I'd start a build thread, so here goes. After doing plenty of investigating & asking questions on TM (some stupid ones too) I thought the time was right.

Some of you may have seen some of these photos I posted a few months before christmas when I first brought it (I'm not sure if its a he or she yet, I'll figure that out as I undress it further, then a name will have to be decided), since then it's been sat in the garage with not much attention being payed to it as the cold got the better of me.

I decided a makeover was due... So, here it stood as I brought it....

As you can see, has had quite a few modifications since it left the factory. Has had some wide wheels put on it, an MG lump was dropped in it with a turbo slapped on it. Also, at some stage a clubby front was welded on (I prefer the clubby front anyway).

I removed the rear windows as there was a fair bit of surface rust around the frames, I had to investigate!

Looks good mate, good luck with the build.

What you got planned for it

At first the plan was to tidy up the bodywork, have the engine tuned and get on the road ASAP. But, after further investigation, the bodywork wasn't up to much.. plenty of hidden areas of rust and filler were discovered (that seems to be the norm with minis I've learned) so I put on the kettle, plonked my backside down and had a rethink about what I wanted...

So, I decided last week that I was going to do a complete rebuild, replace all parts that were knackered with new ones and have the engine 'beefed' up to something inhumane!

Well thats the plan, it's going to take me a while to get through it so thought I'd log it as I went along. Thanks for viewing, all comments and suggestions appreciated, this will be my first build and I'm sure you know more than I do. More pics and info to follow soon.

I am also doing my clubby estate, but mine is a 71 model, with a turbo build going in there. Taken about 6 months so far and nearly ready for paint now. Goodluck with yours, hope to see more pics

Not that I'm an expert, but surely that's a later clubman estate with 1963 plates on it?

Looks great though.

Cheers Kappa... More to follow shortly, any pics of yours?

Wil_h, that's initially what I thought, but it is plain to see someone has put on a new front somewhere along the line as the welding is none too clever. I'm going to have to put it right at some stage, a bit botched in places.

Yep. Deffo a later shell as it's got the ribbed roof which wasn't introduced until 1966 not really an issue though is it? I think it looks a good project basis.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

It looks like a good starting point.

If it was '63 it would have had external door hinges too. No drip rails, suggests post 76. Another tell tale is the subframe fixings at the tower tops. Early cars should have 4 bolts or studs/nuts. post 76 cars have large bolts that take a 1 1/2" socket to undo them.

If you are not after an original period car then it doesn't really matter what shell it is. In my head it gives you free rain to modify it.

Well no, it's not going to be an original period car. It will be fairly modified by the end of it! It's not originally I'm after!

So I set about pulling my not so old car apart. First thing was to get the engine out.

After a bit of jiggery pokery this came out...

I had been in touch with commander BENROSS who told me what could be done with my lump. An engine rebuild is beyond me so off it went to his HQ. I used National Pallets, it was around £50 from North West London up to his place up north.. not bad, I was quite happy with them and would recommend.

Ya I bet!! Well the engine should be ready in about a month he reckons.. when it is I'm gonna take the missus on a 'weekend trip to Yorkshire', and whilst we're up there we could pick up the engine!!
Jesus I'm full of great ideas lol!

It would be nice to meet the man himself and put a face to his name... I hear he does a mean bacon butty!! *happy*

A couple more pics.... after the engine had come out...

And then out came the subframe and a few other bits. It was actually quite rusty in places, well overdue...
