Took my block, crank and head to the machine shop yesterday so thought I would get on with another little job I had been planning - to put up an overhead rail so I can build the engine up on the bench lift it up and slide it over the car and drop it in.

The righthand end as pictured hangs from a 12 x 1.5inch beam and I used that to lift the engine out and had previously been load tested to at least 350lbs, mini engine = 330lbs approx.

The pipe is a 1.5 inch diameter, and I have a 6.5 ton shackle as the slider, well over rated but needs to be to fit over the pipe. The chain fall then hooks into the shackle via a swivel hook.

The great thing about this compared to a floor mounted hoist is when your not using it, it doesn't take up any space :)

Anyway I've seen quite a few sheds and garages on here just recently

I think we could start a new topic section called - Show us your shop or "Man caves" or similar ??

Thanks,

I made up 2off 15" long x 2" wide x 1/4" steel strips with a hole drilled near each end
They go through the ceiling either side of one of the roof beams, (which are 12 inch deep) and then put a high grade steel bolt throught the 2 strips above the beam and tightend up
I also put a 1/4" strip of steel along the top of the beam to act as a load spreader so the bolt does dig into the wood. there is another bolt at the bottom end just below the ceiling.

A the moment there is a chain holding the pipe to the bolt, but I am making up a bracket with some big ass u-bolts.

The chain works for now but is a bit wobbly

Yeh, even with the fan on in summer its too hot, had a month of temperatures over 105, I actually open the internal door from the house and use the fan to blow A/C'ed air in to the garage, with the main door closed.
Its really nice weather just now though :)

King Gaycharger, butt plug dealer, Sheldon Cooper and a BAC but generally a niceish fella if you dont mind a northerner

Rotherham, South Yorkshire

Something I considered when I eventually replace my garage. Have had a block and tackle sat for a few years.

My only comment is when using this sort of set up, you need to have the car perfectly placed for it to work whereas an engine hoist allows for a bit more adjustment. Still a good and neat piece of kit all the same
