Hi guys
first question im putting up here

i have been looking around for EFI kits and electronic ignition kits. all of the kits that seemed to have been used on minis that i have seen require tuning of the ignition maps.

has anyone had a look at these type of kits
http://cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=1665
http://www.fuelairspark.com/ezefi/default.asp

i know these arnt specific to minis, but the thought of simply pluging a TPS, MAP and O2 sensor then choosing your air/fuel ratio just sounds so easy and means you would always have the ideal ratio.

so what im wondering is what people opinions are of these kits and has anyone tried one on a mini and anyone tried one with a turbo mini?

cheers
Paddy

Most good ECUs will self tune the fuel map from a wideband reading.

Never seen one that can sort out the ignition map as well and therefore I'm sceptical.

Be warned, EFi on a 5 porter is a can of worms :)

If only they were really that simple. Most Ecu's have closed loom lamda control, but building a decent map using it takes time and effort.

I found the MS VE Analise Live quick and simple to set up the map (then used the injection timing to balance the inner and outer cylinders whilst VEAL carried on doing its job)

Once you have the VE map close, you set the ECU to close loop on the AFR map.

Thinking about this a bit more.

How do these Quick-tune setups deal with Warm-up, After Start and Aceleration Enrichment etc? These differ widely from engine to engine.

Snake-oil IMHO.

Warwick.

Used these type systems at the last place i worked. On rally 205's mostly. Require you to drive round with laptop hooked up, lambda in for such a number of miles. more you drive the better it tunes.
I havent been included in the system myself, it was my bosses area, but he usualy did slight fiddling on the laptop afterwards.
If anything it can cut down on the amount of time required on the rollers if you still havent got the results you are after

Not Snake Oil as such. But people have far too high expectations of "self tune" systems

Yes they do to a degree, but none of them are simply a case of plug it in and drive about and that's it sorted.

Most if not all have a self tune facility, but they are far from user input free systems.

as for self tuning the ignition, never ever heard of it, and it would be a fools game if there was such a set up. At the very least it would require knock sensors and be able to calculate cylinder power. Would you trust your newley built expensive engine to a computer to determine the ignition advance?

I agree, the 'self' tune is snake oil as it still needs human input at the end, but then, I supose it all depends on what the user wants to get out of it at the end.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I would trust it if it had in-cylinder pressure sensors and the needed setup to get the timing accuracy not to mention the hardware needed for processing this data. With that you could find the optimal ignition timing and detect any knock.

You can get sparkplugs with the pressure sensors but it would be in the order of $20k or something like that to get a working system and I'm not sure you could run with it on a regular basis or could only use it for tuning purposes.

someone needs to adapt the saab ion sence ignition module for general use. Self tune just helps you along, youd be a fool to rely on it :)
