Well yesterday really was a day to forget, after a nightmare getting through the sound testing, this culminated in me having to buy a new exhaust £85 I went out for the first session hell bent on teaching the car who's boss! On the second lap the gear linkage roll pin broke, luckily leaving me in 4th gear so completed the session in 4th which was fine to be honest, just a bit slower out the chicanes.

On the second session about 10 minutes in the car was going very well, with much overtaking being executed. Then a 4th to 3rd downshift for Tower corner resulted in mass shrapnel noises and lack of 3rd gear. I hit the kill switch but at circuit revs things happen quickly. managed to roll as far as the pit entry so didn't get stranded on the track.

The centre web of the gearbox casing is cracked, and 3rd gear obviously destroyed which is not a problem. The problem is the crank is heavily marked, the cam is marked and piston and rod number 3 have taken a pummling.

Pissed off as I was going to fit a windage tray this winter. to prevent exactly this damage.

Gonna strip the engine right down during the week for a proper inspection of things, I feel this may provide an opportunity to build up a k 16v motor though. It will come back harder and stronger!

The flywheel was a twat to get off, I always thought people were exaggerating when they say they jump. Mine jumped nearly 2 foot from the engine when it came off with a big bang!

I personally dont think a windage tray would have made a huge amount of differance think how fast the bits of gear were traveling!

Looks like its got toothache :) A windage tray does stop the schrapnel getting into the engine when they explode.

I thought about the windage tray thing, but would think that the tray would move toward the already dangerously close rotating parts and get chewed up with it.

I have a cunning plan *happy*

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

To be fair the box has done well. since its rebuild it has covered 5000 miles in a 90hp road engine, and 1500 miles on the current 108hp unit with 60 drag runs and 2 hours of circuit work thrown in.

To be honest it didn't make much of a noise, I just lost drive then heard bits of shrapnel flying round so hit the kill switch.

I could cobble it all back together again with a new box, piston and and rod bolts, then polish up the marks on the rod and crank but in all honestly I need much more power than I have currently so will have to carefully assess the remains and work out what to do. Whether to start with a clean sheet of paper or use what I have to build the 16v motor around.

Its a shame to throw it away as it has only covered 1500 miles from new and was not a cheap bottom end!

Well having completely stripped it down the damage is mostly superficial.

Many things are marked, but most stuff will dress up with a file and some wet and dry paper. The only things trashed are the center oil pickup gauze which is torn, and the rod bolt threads were damaged by flying teeth so not gonna scrimp on them.

So other then a standard freshen up of bearings and rings its survived.

I will be building up an SC box for it though!

It's as clear as the nose on your face why you suffered thisa damage,

you painted the engine the wrong bloody colour,

if you had use the proper engine green this never would have happaned, lol

Its back together and the same colour, so I shall be expecting another failure soon!

Rebuilt gearbox with a low milage 998 gear set, sc drops, new oil pump, rings, bearings - the usual.

I have left the windage tray off as I will probably sell the engine complete to make way for the new one. I have one of pauls windage trays and as they are nla I thought I would hang onto it for the 16v engine.

All fired up, run in (well 25 miles under varying load conditions and revs is run in as far as I'm concerned) and now working nicely.

Another gear set bites the dust.

Time to upgrade to straight cut. I have been saving the quaife ATB and clubman gear set for the 16v engine but think they will have to live under my current engine until needed.

ouch..... again... any idea what caused this one? hopefully no collateral damage up top... your gearbox doesn't want you to have a 16 v donk.... it is litterally s__itting itself already

thought about one of the really nice (expensive) gear sets from MED or Swifty combined with the Quafe ATB?
that would be my choice for a 16v turbo altho id be saving for years to afford it haha

Luckily the gearbox casing has survived this time. which is the most important thing in my mind.

I think the failure is down to a lack of mechanical sympathy when changing gear hill climbing. All components that went into the gearbox last time had a known history.

The engine has got away this time, no cylinder damage so will just strip and clean it.

This should hopefully address the issue. Clubman gearset, Atb, fettled casing and a windage tray for when it does blow up.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

IMO if you havent got under crown cooling jets fitted, on a turbo engine, i would remove the windage tray and use it as a large astray for obvious reasons.
