I love these things, but they're pretty expensive?

Personally I'd keep it standard looking and whack a mahoosive turbo under the bonet. Would be great fun to have a 200hp elf...

I've been thinking about reshelling my hillclimber into a min iwith a boot. You can put a spoiler on the boot, which you can't on a mini.

Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

it wasnt really that expensive. £1700 with full mot and tax. could turbo it as i have a spare 1000cc nearly new elf motor in my garage. hmmmmm. im in the process of turboing my '83 sprite though. will see when i pick it up.

Wow, that's a great price for the condition it looks? I've only seen a few for sale, in only slightly better condition for upwards of £5,000...

I'm not totally convinced it is a Mk2 Elf.
I suspect it may be one of the extremely rare Mk1s.
The 850 engine and original build year suggest it could be.

I'm not normally worried about monkeying around with and modifying cars, but I've only seen TWO Mk1 Elfs in the last 15 years, and one of them had been seriously abused and nigh-on wrecked by the previous owner.

the guy said its a 62 elf but registered in 64 so it could be. i wasnt sure the differences tbh. it was apparently restored in the late 90's. there might be a date stamped on the wiper motor and will get a heritage cert to check.

Love these things. Saw a cool one at a show last year. Black with red and gold force rims on. Looked sick.

An 850 with magic wand would be a Mk1.
Check the front brakes as well.

If it has been restored then it may have been "upgraded". The interior is from a late Mk3/4 as yours may well have had cloth seats instead of leather.

just asked him. it is magic wand on an 850 so it should be mk1. even happier now!

It would very probably be automotive murder to start modifying it for a turbo if it is indeed a Mk1...

I've got a complete spare engine & gearbox for a Mk1 Elf sat in the garage, along with the correct single leading shoe brakes, suspension and early steering rack.
The guy I got it from had unbolted the subframe, undone the rack U-bolts and dropped the lot into the corner of a barn.
I want the subframe for another twin-bolt car, but if you need or want any of the rest just shout.

You could remove the head light peaks and treble the value of the car!

Looking at the feeBay pics, there are a few ancilliaries that have been changed for ease & convenience - the bonnet pull is from a different car for example.
The bootlid may have been swapped out as it shouldn't have the Mk2 script under the Elf badge.

the peaks are getting removed before i even set off home in it!!! i will remove the bonnet release too and sort the roof out. will see what i can do regarding the bootlid. think putting it back standard might be the right thing to do. shame..... think it would scare a few people with a 1330 turbo lump running on 10's. :)

Elfs have an internal bonnet release (30 years before the Mini) because there is no other way of opening the bonnet !

If it's a Mk2 then whack a turbo in it without a second thought - it's only if it's a Mk1 that it is precious.

Well done, welcome to the wonderful world of Elfs. Check out the Elf/Hornet Forum website, some nice folks on there, very helpful.

We had four, still have three Elfs left, sold the automatic. Love the wee beasties.

One of them is hmmmm a little rough so I have permission from Herself to do whatever I want with that one, but right now funds are scarce so it sits. Soon, heavy industry will lead to increased spending opportunity.
