I know that this has been disscussed before, but they are actually there now.

I've Been following their progress over the last week on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ProjectSixtyFour

They have so far followed my prediction of not getting to 150, but potentially breaking the record.

It's normally aspirated though isnt it ?

Getting a turbocharged car to 150 isnt that much of an achievement.

Getting a n/a A-series to that speed is a huge achievement.

Although holding such speeds for a few miles on a slippery surface certainly wouldnt be on my list of to-do things in a Mini.

9.85 @ 145mph
202mph standing mile
speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

Whats in the tank on the passenger do you think?

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

There's several pictures with it turbocharged.
Looks heavy like it could do with some TM disease.

It's a 998 (overbored 970) with a 16v BMW head and a turbo.

Record is 131mph.

They reckon they have 280bhp at 8500k, I'm not sure they have. hence why I think they may crack 131, but nit 150.

Sydney, Australia!

They got to 138.7mph, not over a timed mile, therefore not eligible to break the record... yet...

lol 131 is what i got at brunters that day. Like Stevie says it should be very possible, I didn't realise it was a turbo 16v, not so impossive as not a 5 porter :(

Best 1/4 mile 13.2 seconds @116 mph
First 5 port miniturbo to make over 200 bhp on a carb?

But the impressive this surely is these guys have taken this thing to the salt flats and are giving it a go! Sub 1 litre remember! I think it's great! And yeah they should smash the record if they have as much power as they claim! I hope they do it.

138.7 on salt flats in a small bore engine is great!

i have been following this as much as i can but i dont understand the difficulty there having reaching there target speed? maybe i vastly underestimate the difficulty's in this but there currently only 20 ish mph over the fastest ive had my mini and it only stopped there on the limiter
imo the displacement of the engine doesnt matter they claim 100bhp more than me but seem to have nothing to show
matts and benross's speed seem to back up my confusion

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

I think that their claims about bhp are maybe a little high. The main issue is holding the speed for a mile, rather than peaking and then backing off. Also, because of the temp and altitude, the BHP they had will have evaporated somewhat.

Also, at 130 mpg, the next 20 mph is not as easy as the previous 20mph, as you well know.

Personally, as the speed is so low (we all know we can reach this sort of speed in lots of modern cars on a motorway), it makes no sense to go to Bonevillle to do it. It would acyually be easier to do it at a long runway (such as elvington).

Yes, I kow you'd need to get the timing gear and officials etc etc, but I bet it would be cheaper than luggung a car to the US.

However, the Boneville story is a better one to tell the grandkids!

Have they released any dyno info that is seriously impressive for a 998.

Would they be able to use a sprint in the class?

It would need to be a big runway. The salt flats are timed over a mile marker before which the vehicles aim is to already be at peak velocity and then turn round and do it again and average the speed. As wil h said its the maintaining the speed and at elevated altitude and also on salt I'm sure it's not an easy task or the Americans would of beaten it already.

Good luck to the chaps.

How come they haven't modified it to reduce drag very much, surely they could reduce it quite a lot just by using tape and stuff to smooth over stuff etc
Every little helps right?

i was thinking it would have been about the only good reason to de seam a mini, they still have seams, do you think the salt creates more drag than tamac too?

This picture has me a little confused:

http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4...907762673_n.jpg

I remember this was discussed on miniclassic probaby a decade ago - that you "could" remove the engine and leave the trans in place - I didn't think anyone would actually try it however???

I wonder what happened - looks like an idler gear issue given the inspection of the transfer case. If they used overdriven idlers, then it's poissible they stripped the teeth - I know of someone else who did this; I suspect it's more to do with the tooth form and contact pattern than the quality of the gears themselves.
Regardless, working on an engine in the middle of the flats must be a PITA.

My guess is that perspective is confusing you. The gearbox is on the floor, not in the bay, surely?

As for the comments on drag. They have made decent attempts. No arches, all the underside is smooth. They can't sprint it or do other changes because of the class rules I think, has to be a producrion body. I agree some taping could help.

But the reality is that they are measures you take when you are desperate, and they're not there yet.

There is some dyno info, but it's all a bit vague. Remember it's a short stroke 970 overbored, so the bbhp was at 9k iirc. I agree, it's probably a bit optimistic.
