The fault appears to have been an over machined dish in the piston. The centre just cried enough. No serious damage as it happens.

The fire was caused by the rock gasket blowing out and buring on the manifold.

Unlucky. How thick was the crown for reference?

Not thick enough, less than 4mm. There is no signs of det, it is purely a piston failure.

Luckily Ben was there in his car, so today I double drove that, and still won my class!!!

Just an observation and it is one you have probibly already made yourself, but I'd be sealing up that bulkhead better. Just think if ther was a major fuel leak over that hot turbo onto the bulkhead. You would certainly know about it!

Ouch

What would you consider to be the minimum [ ideally] crown thickness for safe turbo piston

Had I not machined them they'd have been fine I'm sure, standard thickness is 7 or 8 mm iirc.

Damage is light, a hone, ne pistons a good clean and that's it.

I haven't checked the valve seats, but ther are onlt a few marks on th head.

Well my car runs 64s and 63s on a good day, in bens I managed a 66.7. So it has potential. I'll put videos up later.

Looks like you were going damn well til that point - shame.
