If they are scrap, sit the piston side on in a vice and drift the pin out.

Cost me a tenner for a local machinist to separate a set of pistons from the rods.

I made a hardwood jig to protect the piston, shaped to conform to the diameter, and turned up pins and a spacer to push the gudgeon out, using a large vice. Those that were stubborn I took round to the local garage and used their press to push them out.

Contrary to advice received on here I did not use any heat and have successfully re-fitted more than one set of pistons the same way.

I used Andy's method with success, and a some tapping with the sledge hammer.

I use some large cap head bolts and an old piece of suitable tube. I place the piston in a large vice side on with the pipe one side, then put the cap head against the pin and wind the vice in.

Only on scrap pistons of course!

I've done the exact same thing with hardwood although I'm using a proper press.... If you heat them in the way in, it makes things easier.

There's no such thing as turbo rods.

old thread revival!!

Hi

Basically I have a set of forged omega pistons I bought years ago. There on standard rods.
I have a set of lightened and balanced rods with no pistons on.
Is there a way I can remove my pistons without damaging them and refitting them to the lightened and balanced rods? Safely?

Thanks
Josh

There is always a risk, but you can warm up the rod, to make it easier

Its very easy to do if you have a press and make a tool up to support the piston adequately

Might just get the machine shop to do it when I take my block, crank and rods to them.

Are you planning to take the pistons home between removing and refitting? You have a chance to balance them , or at least juggle the pins around to get the best balance.

Well I'll see if the guys that are doing the engine work can do it so they'll be able to balance them when they take them off.
I still need to book it all in but I'm planning on using southam mini and metro centre (smmc) as I got them to set my suspension up a few months back and I'm confident in them. Nice bunch of chaps.
