God knows...If they ask, tell the MOT tester in great detail what your running, even down to the code version, pulse widths, etc.. They'll soon switch off and realise time is money and not bother asking any more questions. *hehe!*

To be honest, my engine has never been better on emmissions so I can't see how they can complain. *happy*

It's not fuly understood how ECU systems will be checked as yet, but a car will in theory fail the MOT if it is found that it's ECU unit has been illegally modified or 'chipped'.

it's fine! no-one ever modifies or chips an ECU, if it never had one in the first place, how could it be classed as an ECU modification if there's one there now. It doesn't specify ECU addition or replacement, only modification!

So where does that leave superchips and the like? Competition use only?

I bet this is just trying to stop 155+ mph on the autobahn

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

They will need to provide details on what 'illegal modifications' means, but probably sweet FA in reality.

Bear it mind that's not an official DFT/VOSA web site so it's probably not accurate.

I'm going to my test center this morning, I will ask him for his opinion and what tests he plans to perform.

That said, if I'm no longer legally allowed to have my car remapped to get better fuel efficiency and emissions, then I'm sure some of my human rights have been violated...

It will be fine, the problems will come for those that have the later MPI cars with airbags and seat belt tensioners. All lights have to work when the ignition is on and then switch off as per original modification once the car is started.

You are allowed aftermarket ECU's as long as emissions are within acceptable levels and that all functions (particularly warning lights etc) function as originally intended.

There will be a lot of heartache for all those people in the mUK that will be given a failure because of a perfectly safe electrical gremlin which in many cases will cost more than the cars worth to rectify!

9) Management electronic control unit (ECU) modification.

how is this enforcable?

What is illegal?

And it only says there you can't modify one, seems you may be able to replace it completly. Not sure what the actual words are as the quote above is just a summary.

For the majority, get an ECU code reader. Clear the code in the test station car park, show it to the tester, job's a good un. It will be back on within 1/2 a mile of the test station, but who cares, you've got your ticket...

Wil makes a good point though. Is it illegal to modify or 'chip' your ECU?

if you have replaced your ecu for a different one completely then you haven't modified the factory one, so that would be something different again wouldn't it?

one day boost will be mine!

Had a chat to my MOT tester. He says common sense would be applied. Two example scenarios:

1978 mini - he would test it as a 78 mini. If the emissions where OK and it didn't smoke badly, who cares what controls the fuel/air getting into the engine. It would be a different case if you where to bring proof with the car that it had a newer engine in it that had tighter emission controls, but then why would you do that...

My 2003 A4 - if it passed the emissions test and didn't smoke badly then he's happy. Any engine management lights are not tested, just vehicle safety features like ABS or air bags. Clearing the light in the car park and presenting it to him with no fault lights would be sufficient for a pass.
