Hello All, I have owned my mini for a couple of years now and the desire for more power has finally set in so i thought i would let you all know what i have been up to :)
im planning on building a 998 turbo engine with a spec that will hopefully look something like this:
-A+ block, crank and rods (purchased)
-Flat top pistons (purchased)
-Garrett T2 turbo from a renault 5 turbo (purchased)
-Mirage stainless manifold (purchased)
-Hif44 (already had just needs a rebuild)
-Metro turbo plenum (purchased)
-S2 cosworth intercooler
-Megajolt
-MPI tank
-Metro turbo fuel regulator
-Standard gearbox (already have) with central pickup and x-pin diff

Probably missed lots off but it gives you an idea. I have never rebuilt an engine on my own before so iv jumped in at the deep end a bit but it should be a good learning exercise. My car is off the road at the moment as im just waiting for some welding to be done on it before i can mot it but it shouldnt be too long before i have it back :) i have missed it lol.
Here are some pictures of the engine stuff

and here is the car that the engine will be going into

which when i bought it looked like this

Thanks for looking :)
Iain

Welcome! Nice project! Btw That's a HIF38 and most definitely not a turbo carb. Will need converting.

Oh right :( i was aware that it was an n/a carb but someone told me it was the 44.
Do you think it would be advisable to get rid of that and look out for a 44?

Looks good :)

I'm collecting bits for my 998 turbo, which will probably end up being the same spec as you've said, but i've got a cooper head, but i'm at much earlier in the process than you, still collecting parts and have a way to go..

I'll be following this though, as it should help me with my build.

Just out of interest whereabouts are you in the country?

Don't see why you couldn't convert the HIF38 to turbo spec. May suit the 998 well

Ahh, at least you have more bits than me, i only have a T2, the head (which is in bits) and megajolt in the post.

I'm at uni in Hertfordshire, so its a bit too far for me to have a nosey *tongue*

And i got my head off ebay, it had no bids as it looked in horrible condition, but it hasn't turned too bad so far, a good clean has done it good.

in the plenum theres a restrictor plate to make the carb behave correctly under boost, to use the hif 38 you'd have to make another one the correct size. not sure how big that would be though!

Yes good luck it never easy doing something that is not standard, you can't just buy the parts done you have to mod them which can take time and money to get it right.

Have a look at my budget 998 build linked below. I did a similar thing. Cost me about £600 for the parts.

1275 N/A Sprite, 998 T2 Turbo Mayfair
1275 EFi Turbo

Evening all,
i havent made any real progress apart from buying a hif44 off ebay.

On closer inspection of the turbo i have noticed that the turbine housing has two cracks in it around the actuator valve hole. i have read that some cracks will not affect performance but i was just wondering if anyone would be able to tell be if these are ok or is it scrap? here is the picture:

Thanks
Iain

Heres a picture of the arches fitted on one side

*happy*

But more importantly i was having a quick play with my manifold kit on a spare head and im a bit worried that i have been mugged off and just been sold a randomly bent bit of pipe. When i placed the main bit onto the flanges, it seems to be too short. Here are some pics:

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks
Iain

That seems so obvious now you have said it thankyou.

In other news i have managed to buy 3 12g295 heads off ebay for £250! Bit of a bargain as i can sell two and make most of that money back :) Apparently one of them is unskimmed and has the original 28cc chambers but i will measure them to be sure. Going to pick them up on Thursday *happy*

Cheers

What does the rest of the kit consist of? either get a tee section to make the center branch, or add a bit in the middle from one of the bent ends, they look quite long.
