Having never run a duplex it looks odd to me without a tensioner. Do people put a tensioner on or not bother? All other cars I have are simolex or belt.

IMO any timing drive should have a tensioner. On 28th Aug, 2011 Kean said:

None of the major engine builders fit them, neither do I. They arent wide enough to support all 3 rows of links so it just puts pressure on the inner one which strains the pins, though Ive never heard anything bad happening because of fitting them I seriously doubt it! |

Well now I'm thinking I won't bother. It would be easier without and the engine is so noisy anyway I doubt I will hear a little rattle. Decisions, decisions..... http://www.twin-turbo.co.uk

I've fitted one and it was wide enough to cover all three rows of links (but only just). Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ??? |

Don't bother Ben. Think of the weight. If it rattles and is annoying, fit one later. It's an easy job with no front bodywork and a front rad. Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

I always run them, I'd rather have accurate control over the cam timing, than random scatter, running without a tensioner is to cam timing what a dizzy with worn spindle bearings is to ignition scatter - not desirable! If Carling made Mini engines

With tensioner. Without your cam timing can be affected as the chain whips about about at different engine speeds on the tensioner side. Dont know why you wouldnt fit one really, seems silly not to.

I wonder just how much it would affect cam timing. Concidering the load on the cam, the short chain and I can't see it being much. Has anybody measured it or is it all just speculation?

The Kent timing set that Swifty sells are designed to eliminate chain whip. Mine has no movement in it at all still after 2 years of use so no affect on timing.
I seriously doubt it! |

Mine does have a little movement. I think I will try without and see how it goes. Also I don't hae a tensioner in the garage so that biased the decision a little. http://www.twin-turbo.co.uk

i use one on my engines. the timing chain just seems too slack without. though many people run without, as shown in this post, i think its a matter of personal preferance |

It should not be a matter of personal preference. There is a better way, but we have no data. Choosing a colour is a personal preference. http://www.twin-turbo.co.uk
