I have a ODYSSEY EXTREME RACING 25 BATTERY, and I think its gone Man Down!! as it will not hold its charge, I have had it on charge for a day and it will run the car for a bit then it will die.
It was sat with ½ charge for about 2 months, also when the car is at idle it was on 11.89 Volts.

This is the one i have.

Looks like its a new one for me.

These types of battery have a habit of just dropping dead on you without warning,

i had the reasons explained to me once by a chemist ,something to do with the plate arrangments

doesnt always work though, have a charger that has dedicated programs for AGM and gell and normal lead acid batterys. will bring a marginal battery thats been drained too low for too long once, but deep cycle it a few times and no chance.

Lidl sell the intelligent chargers every so often - brings them back from the dead for £12.99. Best thing i ever bought there!

At idle it should be up in the 14 volt range, as it's coming from the alternator.

14.4v charging, I'd check your alternator or wiring mate, especially if the charging light wasn't on.

It will only show. 14 volts on fast idle, bellow about 1500 rpm you'll get the voltage of the battery, check it with a meter on fast idle and you,l see if its the battery or alternator, cheers Ben

Alternator voltage will depend on the alternator and the speed it runs at.

No load fully charged battery is 12.6 to 12.8v.
No load discharged battery is 11.8 to 12v
No load volts of 12.1v is roughly 50% charge. 10.5v means the battery is fully discharged, and probibly will never recover.

Your alternator should at idle with little or no load still be providing enough voltage to a little higher than the no load fully charged voltages above at the very least

sulfation is a state that usually occurs when a battery has been deep discharged and left for a long period of time. The plates become coated with lead sulfate and makes the battery difficult if not impossible to charge.

If you have had the battery on charge for 16 hours, measure the post voltage after an hour or so after taking it off charge, if its less the 12.6v, its fucked. Its important to leave it for an hour or so before measuring the voltage, as the charge voltage takes a time to dissipate.

The only other way to test the battery is to take it to a garage that have a battery load test meter, wich applies a load while measuring the current and voltage.

I'd advise always using a smart battery charger for these typ of batteries. I had one that just went dead once. Same with all Lead acid batteries.

This might be true with an old dynamo system, but with an alternator I would expect greater than battery at idle if the alternator is working.

I've used various AGM batteries for years. I've had loads of them die, had 2 die in one weekend last year!!! Grrrr.

Best buy is a smart charger that will keep them topped up. A battery isolator is a good idea as things like clocks and radios trickle out power.

Even well looked after batteries can die suddenly. I've even lifed them at times and thrown them away before they had chance to die!

Hi guys

I was thinking about buying a dry cell battery... so I’ve contacted someone who sell’s it and could give some advice about this subject.

What I get was, for the mini, Odyssey 30 would be good. However the dry batteries have a high starting current, but low AH, that means, they don’t deal with long slow draining.

So clocks, alarms, etc are not If the batteries remain undercharged state for too long the battery will suffer permanent damage. So if the car is stored for too long, the battery should be removed.

But normal batteries can’t be stored undercharged also…

I get a little scared since these batteries are expensive…

I think a proper charger ( 3 stage, smart charger) is one solution...

I have seen LiPo cells start a car, but they require very specialist chargers. An altermator would set them on fire fairly sharp. however, for you super weight concious types..

after years of running race cars with these sort of batteries an intelligent charger is important but especially with the oddesey (sp?) batteries you can't clamp them as tight as some of the red top equivalents! had several of these scrapped due to clamping issues, especially on cars with high vibrations like f1 cars with serious spring rates.
