Hey All,
I’m Jamie Hill, I Live just North of Portsmouth up the A3, I am 24 at the moment, My Dad Ted got me into Mini’s back when I was 13/14, He says he did it to keep me on the straight and narrow and give me something to do as opposed to roaming around the streets, well it certainly has worked as I have been hooked since, we work together on all our projects and it is great, both enjoy it and have a laugh and it’s good to do something together, everything is straight 50 / 50 down the middle split so it makes it great for buying bits, We are a part of P&SMOC – Portsmouth & Southampton Mini Owners Club and have been since we have started out with Mini’s

First Mini we had together was a totally bog standard Mini Sprite, We just did mainly cosmetic stuff, and then we went to Stage 1 kit and various other bits including chopped down trailer, biggest thing was taking it down to Keith’s Convertibles down West and getting it chopped down to a Convertible, I Must admit it was scary leaving it down there in his front garden of scrap mini roofs and shells, but he did a Great job! Eventually we sold that and came away from the Mini Scene for a while, I have seen it on eBay twice since we sold it and would love to own it again one day, have got some great history on it if I ever meet who ever owns it now.

We then bought a 1939 Morris Eight Series E, it was a Barn find from down Holsworthy and we bought it with the intention to restore, we go so far with it and realised it was going to take longer than first expected, as all of these things do I am staring to realise! 

So…….. Dad went on the hunt for a Mini again, something that we could have running on the road and play with whilst the Morris was being done in the workshop, we found the Clubman on eBay! Tax and Ticket, bought it from Reading about 2 years ago ish, trailered it home as it was overheating like a Pig, So we decided to get it in the workshop to give it a once over, that’s then when we realised this wasn’t going to be something we could just do quickly either, time went on, we realised we were going to have to do more on the Mini to get it to the standard we wanted it at, So we reluctantly sold the Morris project and decided to concentrate on the Main thing, The Mini!

I’ll let pictures will tell the rest *happy*

So, here it is! Had to make some space on the driveway to squeeze it up and in the workshop,

We first of all decided to get the Engine out to give it a once over, upon doing so realised this thing had not been looked after for a long time and had not had a descent clean since it probably rolled of the production line.

First of all we had to give it a clean-up so we degreased the whole engine, and then took the head of for inspection.

Managed to get hold of a Unleaded head from a friend.

Cleaned up Piston Faces.

Sandblasted Engine.

I just really like this pic, no relevance 

Then final painted engine.

Thanks Matty *smiley* Thats the trouble though, Everytime I have done something, I then look at something else on the car for instance the engine bay/subframe and realise it looks like shit! so i just keep cleaning / stripping and rebuilding the parts *happy*

So with the engine looking a lot better, it wasn’t going to look right next to that greasy old subframe, so on with the strip of the subframe and clean and paint.

As it came out, still with the engine bay paint all over it.

Found a Split weld after rubbing down the subbi, has since been welded back up.

Kurusted and Tester patch of paint.

First Coat.

Finished,

Hey All,

Here are some of the pics from when I started to find the Rot in the Mini, not very interesting pics so I will keep them to a minimum……

Both Floors Driver and Passenger side have Rotted out, Should of known when I picked the car up, the two layers of carpets where saturated in Water…… *oh well*

Front Wing, will Blend it all in later.

All New Panel on there now.

Rear Valance was as Crumbly and Crunchy as a Bowl or Corn Flakes. New Valance fiited.…….

In Boot, went on both sides like this, More behind the tank though which I am sure is more common in Mini’s that side ?

Couple Of random ones, Just tidying bits up and patched etc.

Rolled Over on a Matress *smiley*

These are all old pics from the build, will let everyone know when this is up to date in line with what I am actually doing.

I would never do something like this again:

When i was young i made the same mistakes.

Never patch, always change.

You will be angry in two years, when you see that your work was "for the fishes" (austrian saw)

At least you are open minded enough to be able to accept constructive critisicm without getting shitty about it, so well done on that score.
As others have said, if at all possible get all rot cut out, and aim to use as little body filler as you go along.
I've been repairing car bodywork for 15 years, I still wouldn't call myself good, but without a doubt practise makes perfect.

best way i think of it is if you replace rather than patch at least you know that whole pannel should last another ten years or so, well done by the way on the work does look good

Done now needs redoing lol

Hey guys,

Cheers for all your comments, And Tom I am 100% open to any comments and everyone’s opinions on here, That’s the main reason I am on this forum as everyone says it as it is and doesn't pussy foot around, that’s what I like !
I think I’ll leave it as is for the time being, As I will be giving spraying the car a go myself, so will see how that comes out, then when it needs to be done again I’ll do it properly.

Thanks for your comments though guys *smiley* Definitely noted for future.
