bought myself a cheap 998 block +40, pocketed, 11 stud, nitrided crank, with pistons and rods.
i'm wandering if it's going to be cheaper for me to turbo it instead of my 1293, so i don't have to buy a straight cut gearbox and drops cos it will be making less power?

anyways the pistons themselves are marked '21965 + 508' anyone know if these are suitable for turbo use, and any idea where i can get a set of rings from?

cheers!

I'm not 100% on what the pistons are. Try phoning minispares and asking them if they have rings for them.

Might just be easier to get some new pistons though.

Just check that the block is +0.040".

0.508mm is 0.020"

Just checked and it is infact +40, i contacted the seller and the pistons were from before it was rebored and are +20. So looks like your right Wil i might just get some new pistons.

Also do you think its a necessity to have a straight cut box and straight cut drop gears on a turbo'd 998?
the spec being:
998 +40
8:5.1
Standard 12G940 33/29mm 28cc
SW5
GT1752

GT box
3.1 Fd
X pin diff

The story goes that i have a 1293 that was rebuilt a couple thousand miles ago, that i was going to turbo but with the power it would be making, it would need a straight cut box and drop gears.
However i don't a have a specific power target. I just want something quicker than the NA 1293, so i'm wandering wether it would be more suitable and cheaper for me to just turbo the 998.

Any advice welcome :)

Stick to no more than 12 psi boost and you should have around 100-120hp which will be fine with helical gears.

It wont be long till you want to turn up the boost though :)
