Well after deciding a while ago to go down the turbo route, managed to find myself a reasonably original Metro Turbo engine as the base for my build. Car is slowly progressing, but thought that i'd spend the money on the engine so it is ready for when the car is finished.
So, here are some pics of the engine:
Most bits are there, most of the bits missing are bits that I will be replacing anyway. :)
Engine is believed by the seller to be standard bore, but I plan to overbore +20 to 1293cc anyway. Crank is a turbo crank with the relevant number to prove it. No pistons, but obviously will be needed for the build anyway. Con rods are there, standard.
A few questions now:
Firstly, one of the chambers of the cylinder head has been worked by a previous owner. Was wondering if a more knowledgable person on here would know if it has been done too much already or if would be able to be finished off if I was to get someone like TurboPhil to work the head for me. At the deepest point, it is near as damn 5/16" deep, and is this shape:
I don't have know-how to know if this has been worked too much so would appreciate a second opinion. As the second picture shows, it could do with some tidying up anyway, I think it was a home job. And he has only done ONE of the chambers.
Lastly. For Now. Can someone give me some info or direct me to some information on turbos. I know the Garrett T2 has been commonly used, but does it have to be a Renault 5GT one or just any T2. I have seen them from TDI engines and wondering if they are the same as the 5GT one or if it has to be a specific type.
Also hoping to use a mirage manifold kit to save cutting the bulkhead, wondering how much that affects the turbos you can use.
thanks,
H
