North of the Netherlands

Hi all,

I thought it was about time I introduced myself a bit and showed how I am trying to build a forced induction mini.
I am a 34 year old engineer living in the north of the Netherlands with my wife (well technically not married but it feels te same.. *happy*) and 2 beautiful daughters.

Basically, I am building a M45 supercharger on an ex MG metro engine with intercooler.
Spec be about:
- 1293cc (21253+20 pistons)
- M45
- NA MG cam
- 1:1.3 rockers
- Mini Spares MSE6 with 28cc combustion chambers

Let me start by saying I really am not after top bananas (yes…..I am aware of TM 10th commandment).
I guess it’s an engineer thing, need to build something…something out of the ‘ordinary’…

My van;
I have had it for over 10 years and having an MOT for half of that time.
When I got it some welding needed to be done, it was done on a student budget and I regret doing some of in it just half; for instance it could have done with a new face which was butchered by the previous owner for accessibility.

This is how it looks now:

Basically a solid shell, 10 inch ATS rims, fiesta conversion disc brakes (I plan to change these over to some proper 4 pots), stainless Playmini exhaust and stainless custom fuel tank.
Inside; rear upholstered (for a bit of sound deadening and because glue remains of previous owners’ upholstery) bucket seats and custom dash; inside does still need some tidying-up…

The (non original) 998cc engine was about to die so it was in need of replacement.
I wanted something different and opted for the M45 option however with intercooler.
Initially I wanted to use a carb but the way I was thinking… that was basically a very stupic idea… (very…)

So injecting it… lot of reading needed to be done… books, sites and of course projects of for instance Paul S & Sturgeo, Rod, Jean… still amazes me how far these people can take this subject; really great stuff!
I choose to settle for a wet manifold for now to not complicate things even further.

Don’t want to make this post too long so that is about where I am now:

Need to order injectors I found, getting some injector bosses knocked-up and weld some flanges for TB and circulation valve.

Hope you like it even thought it's a girly supercharger... *tongue*

I like it, im suprised you didnt go for abit of a hotter cam, like a 276 still quite mild for reliability for you be abit more punch. Sc engines seem to work quite well with hot cams, i have seen a few running 280+ cams with quite good results one of them was jonnysti on here

Drives
-Ford S-max Mk2 Ecoboost
-Rover 100 VVC #2 - track project

Searching is all you need on TurboMinis

Looks interesting. I've got a 274 cam for my supercharged engine

Thanks lads,
I know, I have been thinking about adding a hotter cam.
But this is what I already had, better than std.
Still, the engine isn't built yet... *happy*

Hmm, look what I just found:

Now, how risky would it be to send a cam by snail mail...?

Hey Pim,
Thx, hard to match your engineering skills though! (hoogstandje)
Thanks for the offer, might be interested in the cam, see PM.

Slow progress as ever...
Getting into grips with the TIG welder a made a few bits:
'manifold' for suction side of the supercharger

And some connection bits for throttlebody and part throttle return valve:

These are injectors I got for the US; Siemens DEKA IV 60LBs/hr short body and pockets made by a friend:

intresting stuff.

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

Much too long ago since update.... :$
Life getting in the way, know what I am talking about...?

This is how things now stand in the engine bay:

Pretty much all tubing is now done (tack welded).
Now working out brackets for IC and other parts.

And looking to position the return valve:

The valve on itself needs a bit attention as of the shelf it will leak quite a bit!

Hoping to make some progress but busy life only allows a few hours a week it doesn't go fast (enough)!! :(

Edit:
Small pictures, now sorted..

Great car

there is nothing wrong with a A-series that a turbo can't fix.

Thanks mate.
Good of you, pushing for updates... *smiley*

Spot the differences:

Glass pearls blasting (is that the name for it?) works so nice.
Opened up one of the holes to use for IACV connection.

Also been working on brackets for the intercooler; I modified the original Audi one, only have picture of this side though.

Also welded a thick piece on the inlet manifold for vacuum/pressure connections to MS, boost gauge, dumpvalve, recirc valve and pressure regulator.
Very chuffed with the result; not bad for an amateur eh?

Thanks for watching.

Thought it was time to show I am (project is) still alive.
Slow progress as usual though.. *frown*

Bought a lift that I found rather cheap, could not let it go, a big relief for knees and back I must say.
Must find a more subtle ramp then those bricks but for now they work fine.

Getting everything fitting is still a challenge; Filter just fits, finalising the fixation on the supercharger.

On to the circulation valve, a bit of a squeeze but returning it to suction side of SC should work.

Got some more Festo hose, fits quite good eventhough the thick peice is a pain to bend.
I bent it with a tie strap and dropped it in boiling water to make it adjust to new shape.

Thinking about using the same (11mm ID) tube for the IACV.

See if you can spot this one.... :)
It's a bit of an experiment, not 100% satisfied yet but with some improvements it might actually work.(?)

Also bought a cam from Stuart Gurr, a 273 with 112 LCA and not that expensive either (not a regrind).
So really should now get going finishing all the scaffolding so I start building the engine...

Also got a Swift Denso altenator from a friend but seems to be as big as the original one?
I guess it's not the same some of you are using......

Edit: fixed the pictures, were too big
