Well leading on from my thread about my manifold here are some pics of the car that the mani went into.


The first engine didnt last to long as the pistons I was using didnt like boost too much. But the new engine with new pistons is working well.


Heres a spec list for anybody thats interested

1380ish
8:1 comp
top secret dished nissan pistons
std balanced bottom end
lightened flywheel and backplate
GTS cam
Lightly tickled head with 26cc chambers
modified NA HIF with pitot tube plenum chamber
dizzy ignition 20 deg max advance
close ratio helical box with 3.4 diff ratio and centre pick-up
std drops
homemade exhaust manifold
intercooler
GT1548
0.5 bar boost

Hopefully before the end of the year Ill get a wideband and megajolt to finish off the tuning. Been using a narrowband and just made sure it was rich when on boost, but I havent really nailed it yet in fear of melting stuff. That been said it goes really well and gets respectable milage.

The pitot tube is bigger now at around 8mm ID.

Well I havent updated this in a while.

Well I finally got myself a AEM wideband and started polishing the needle in the general areas (stations 6-12) and Ive got it fairly close but ive been to scared to hold it at full throttle for any period of time.

So Ive made a "stationometer", stole the basic design from TurboTel.



Fitted it last night and it seems to work, hopefully ill get a chance to test it this evening.

So the easter weekend was a good one for tuning the mini and ive come up with some interesting results.
This id one of the first runs and as you can see its rather lean at the top.

So with the help of my mate Dylan and my "stationometer" we set about tuning each station individually.



This worked well until we got to station 9 and 10, where we had to remove stacks of material off the needle. After a couple more runs we concluded that taking more off the needle wasnt going to help, we needed a new plan.

I had read some where that increasing the size of the pitot tube created a larger pressure differential, so we went from this,

Big difference ! Now the needle was richer all over but still need more at the top. So we banged some ATF in the dashpot, leaner and better pick up but after two hard blasts the thin ATF got forced out of the dashpot and it started miss-firing.

From the vid you can see there is a rather large boost spike as I get to WOT, now this could be a number of things but im gonna try take some pre-load off the actuator first and see if that helps.

So after 23 runs ive come up with some intersting things about using a pitot tube to make the carb boost sensitive.

The bigger the tube the larger the pressure diff, but my needle is vastly thinner then any of the needles ive seen on this site(ill try post an exel spreadsheet thing) so this leads me to believe that a pitot tube will work well for low boost applications but not so well for high boost stuff.

Yip, nissan pistons. 73.6mm, shallow deck-height so the block has to be decked rather a lot, bit they are strong and cheap. 1000 rand with chrome rings

thats really interesting , i run a pitot tube on the bike . if having probs with the thickness of the needle , just move the pitot down to a higher pressure area like before the ic .

Weeeeellllll the mini has been sitting in the "Bad-corner" for the last 3 weeks.

After my last post, I adjusted the actuator pre-load and knocked back the timing a wee tad, all seemed well. Let the girlfriend drive it to varsity and back a couple of times as her scooter was bust. Still fine and dandy.

Then I decided to take it to work the one morning(on the first day at my new job). Started first swing, oil pressured was good, no odd noises, cool. Got about two blocks from my house and I started hearing a strange wet fart sound, so I stopped at the petrol station 100m down the road. Lift the bonnet, nothing obvious, still farting though.

Look underneath, massive puddle of oil forming, SHIT ! Shut it down, call my dad for a tow. I suspected that my oil drain from the turbo had come loose, BAD MINI !

Anyway left it another week, moved the mini from its normal spot and found this,



Had a fair idea where it was from and my suspicions were right.



Not really sure how to fix it, the hole is tapered so I could try turn another plug and press it in or i could drill it out, tap the hole part the way down and fit a grub-screw.

What do you guys reckon ?

Looks good Dan,

I am going to ask you your tuning skills when my car is done. and probably your bonnet modding skills aswell as my uhm SC14 charger is gining to be difficult to fit behind the radiator.

Which I could make the run but I am studing at the moment so this post was made on the 3rd of November okay.
