i want to turbo my absolutely standard 998 engine
it has 20k on the clock and has never been driven hard
i want to turbo it on an absolute budget
i have found that t3s are the cheapest option, i know its not the
best option but that is the route im taking
i already have the turbo, carb and manifolds which i have bought for 100quid
i know i need the following things:
regulator
pump
ic
pipes

i have had a read through on here and understand that people are using standard dizzys

i want my build to be an absolute cheap option as i have a 1275 turbo i am building at the moment

i know i may need a 12g295 head but this would stretch my budget is there any other options that are cheaper?

thanks
dan

A locked dizzy set at 24 deg is the cheapest option.

You need a cheap way to lower the CR (decompression plate) and you'll need to modify the bulkhead to get the turbo in.

Also add to the list oil feed and return for the turbo unless it came with these bits.

T3 with a standard 998 will be hideous. You won't get Boost until late 4k rpm.

In all honesty there is no such thing as a cheap turbo build, I tried to do it and I've spent in excess of £750 to date.

You can use a STD dizzy but you need to weld the weights, and fix the timing with additional advance provided by the vacuum.

You really need to search with the magic button that says "search" you'll find everything you need to know.

But if your turboing you other engine - shouldn't you know it already??

i understand that the t3 will be bad but i just want to get a bit more power from my daily driver until i put the 1275 in

i have searched on this site and other sites but i keep getting the same answers, i want to lower the cr without the use of a 12g295 and as cheap as possible and a decomp plate seems a good idea. any ideas where i could get one?

i already have a bulkhead box in place as i welded one in when i had the engine out last but funds dried up so i want to turbo my standard 998 at the moment until i get the money for the my engine

Try getting hold of a gt15 or 17. I bought mine for £40 with buggered bearings. Rebuilt it with a kit myself and its been right as rain since. Just modified the T3 manifold with a bit of butchery.

see my 998 turbo thread below.
cost was about £600.

I used a T2 from a scrappy that cost £50. It doesn't smoke and had very little play.

The head was modified by me to have approx 24cc chambers (giving about 10:1 compression) and larger ports. A la Vizard.

Tbh a gt15 from a scrappy is easy ot a k14 or i think a t15 from a vax deisel is easy as pie to find abit of brummy enginering amd jobs a goodun. But really if you want more power for cheap just get a 1275 personally. But turbos are the way forward

Decomp plates are available from a few places, johnspeed i think is one.

This setup will not make a nice daily drive, but I understand thta getting the right turbo and then having to make the exhaust elbow, actuator bracket etc all adds to the cost.

I gave yup trying to convince people it was silly to put the metro turbo on a 998 daily drive as no-one listens.

Plus, you'll loose performance below the boost point, so inneffect you'll be making your 998 less powerful and thus less fun below 4500rpm - exactly where you'll spend most of the time on a daily

Listen to will, he knows what he's talking about - don't do it!!

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.
