You've got now a good one to take engine of and inspect...... gearbox.
Mine had a broken case at the idler bearing support... hope that's not your noise.
This also shown highly used crank/bearings/oil pump and bores/pistons/valves defo a junk engine.
Hopes your will have some health inside :-
Whatever an A-serie cannot live with that sort of animal power as Your for long.
I would take it of ,and look inside... Think you're on rebuild

you say a ringing click when the engine is switched off,

It cant be the double roller then, as it turns with wheel speed.

good point joe , ...new info

the ringing click doesnt happen if i have the clutch pedal down when i switch off ,

also , if i drive in forward or reverse and push the clutch in and coast it makes a tinkling rattle sort of noise ....drop gears bottom idler layshaft ??? its not engine speed related its rd speed .

ill try in 4th .

hmmm well ,the drop gears are all fine ,and the bearings LOOK ok ,so i think i may have to pull the engine and wip the box off ...bummer .

is there anything i can test in the box with the transfer case off ?

one thing i did notice , is the layshaft thrust washer tang makes a click from side to side in its slot .but i think they all do that ?

Would you mean that you could not open the box??*Confused*
From your piccies transfer case seem to be worn ,as idler and his shims, not much life left in them.
I would nicely clean the gearbox and look for cracks, anyway a good set of bearings couldn't be optional ...

no fab ,just being lazy and seeing what i can through the side holes after taking the side casing off.

the gears and shims are fine , only wear is the side casing ,but not much just a bit zippy under the finger nail.

think i may be back to the double roller cage idea .

Ummm.....

I think that you need to look at the RTS in some detail.........

Just to eliminate it of course.

angus ,yes , in fact the flywheel was blimmen mega tight ,3 ft bar on a puller to get it off with a big bang from a hammer on the centre .

paul , the clutch and flywheel look fine so far , nothing rattling ,nothing untowards...have not taken the pressure plate off yet .

well the box is out and apartish .all bearings so far visible or tested have thier cages complete and spin freely .

layshaft is fine and bearings good .
so bit stuck so far ..
only thing i have noticed , is , after i tried to get the pinion nut undone with the air gun ,without locking the gears ,(thinking it may just shock off ),the assmbly span as you might expect ,and the nut did not come off ,,thing is , i did this with the bearing retainer plate off ,and now there are some marks on the side of the diff where it has rubbed against the bearing ,even a small chip off the side of one tooth ,now did i do this with the air gun .,or was this rubbing in use ??

i assmbled it all back again ,and deliberately pushed the double roller over so it rubbed ,then put the bearing retaining plate on ,and it snugged up and pushed the bearing over as youd expect and no rubbing ...

is there something that can happen to a shimmed diff and double roller in use that can make them rub ,?? case distortion ?

or should i assume i did it just now, because i had no plate holding the bearing in ,and look for something else ? hmmm

more investigation tomorrow ...

Please don't use the rattle gun to lossen the pinion nut when the gearbox is locked up. You can brinnel the bearings and gear teeth.

I'm sure you already know this and I am teaching you to suck eggs. If so, I am sorry.
