just popping some pics of this in here ,the last 3 days and todays work , including getting the hydraulic fittings and a 50 mile round trip to get welding gas . ill do some writing tomorrow , hope its of interest .:)

its a 1.4 so a fair few quid cheaper on rd tax ,more economy ,and a bit more power i think . the engine has has a 1.3s cam in it to give more lift .and i,think i may be able to get a multi oint head for it ,which has more flow and better manifold .

the plundered donor car at the scrappy .

dragged the engine out the bottom ..

the old 1.6 stonker .

exhaust clearance to remind me ..

extraction completed ..

should fit in the back of a mini !?

sump off to get the return migged in ..

migged return voila..

blimmen hours wasted trying to get a non spiggot mainshaft to engage a spigot clutch plate ,changed plate next day ,voila slipped on a treatski ..

biult up the manifold with weld to fix rust damage and create a t2 size hole ..

blocked off the o2 sensor ghetto styleee..

more flanging ..

old bit of 1/2 inch plate flame cut and routed out ..

flushed the bolts to be welded in when its welded to the mani .

snug flange..

mounted flange..

in situ

turbo bits ,a 60 trim t2 off a renault 19..

clearances look ok so far .

inlet housing pipe to be welded ..

inky icle intercooler ,,oh dear ..

iv got all the pipe and fittings for a tenner so thats good ,and a new lpg mixer is bought of ebay for 19 quid ,so all systems go so far ...

lost half a day getting the welding gas ,but it welded v well to the mani and looks solid .

may go down the yard again and get that 1.4s head with the bigger valves at the weekend ..spent 6 -7pm wed ev getting the multi point inlet off the 1.4s with a couple of half inch spanners ,and a short ratchet , only to find the head is different enough that the inlet wont just bolt to the 1.4 single point head DOH!!!

I love Mk3 Astra's. I think they still cut it with todays modern looks. The last one i had was the yellow 'sport' estate. I wish now that i'd never got rid of it.

You should have just bought a TDS with the 1.7 isuzu engine. Lots of fun to be had with them and you keep your fuel economy.

Me and John played with a mates 1.5td corsa - it could smoke the tyres in third when we had finished. Only cost about £25!

It could also smoke you out until we turned the fuelling down a bit!

im guesing, not having to pay through the nose for a shagged engine, cheaper insurance, and cheaper road tax.....

might be wrong though!!

Blinding project btw, absolutley love it.... is there any benefit in using a 1.6 mpi cylinder head on the 1.4 block?? pm me if so....

I currently have my parents old 1.4mpi mk3 astra in vaux pink/red. ticked over to 140000 the other day and its still on its original clutch!!! absolutely cracking little car, still not quite as good as my old estate tho...... seriously love that, its sits in the yard at work and somehow i cant quite bring myself to scrap it.......

And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers!

thanks and your dead right ND , lot cheaper and much more economy ,.......you can allways expect a rash of ''you shoulda''and ''why didnt you's'' comments lol.

the mpi 1.6 probably has a bigger chamber ,so gives a lower cr ,good for higher boost , i think the head would swap straight on .if hes crushed the 1.4 mpi down the yard i ll give you a call ?

I,ll be interested to hear how you get on with DVLA when it comes to letting them know you have reduced engine size and expect to get a lower rate of VED - they are getting very funny about this now.

look at roberts other projects, chucking in c20let is just to easy and defeats the home brew engineering that robert likes

not pretty but ,functional , created a elbow from the old cast piece ,which was pointing at the rad originally ,now goes nicely under the cuttout in the sump . not quite sure what the cast bit was made of ,seemed to weld ok ,but was a bit dusty on grinding ,so it may all just fall off .....now that would be noisy!

also redid my trigger wheel, due to me having made it originally 10 degrees advanced ,thanks to the haynes manual telling me that the pulley mark was at tdc ....NOT! ,,,

at lleast it explains why my timing on the x16 was about 10 retarded from where id expected it to be lol.

off to get the 1.4 mpi head tomorrow ,this will bring my base engine to around 90 bhp ,rather than 72 odd ...much better .

also found out that this turbine , is the same as used in the lotus carlton ,so flow wise should manage half of 377 bhp .which is a relief , id felt it may be a bit limiting ... oh ,and its a 55 trim not 60 trim comp.

no, her feet are touching the ground ,although she can catch lightning ,levitation is beyond her at the moment .

oh , and i was wrong its a poxy renualt 5 turbine ..hear nic laugh .

so whats that 160 bhp max ? the compressor is a 35.6mm one though ,so no idea what its off ,,,, the closest is a fiat or hyundia ,but they both have the wrong a/r turbine .research continues ...

ahh it IS renault 19 , there are 2 different versions ,big turbine and small ..

Had an M plate TDS Isuzu Astra - seemed to like left foot braking (no nasty engine cutout switches on brake pedal like my VW)
