hi all,

i have started the collection of all parts needed to start a 998cc turbo engine

i already have the following:
hiff44 carb + t2 and t3 turbo + plenum
a standard a+ 998cc engine with verto clutch and revised gearbox
metro inlet manifold + acutator
revision kit for the hiff44
facet electronic fuel pump

underway
10 row oil cooler
air filter
mirage manifold (some day it will arrive...)
megajolt ignition mapping + edis4 module
fuel lines + coupling
uprated radiator


i still need
dizzy + fuel pump blanking plate
new ford fiesta ht leads
12g940 head
water hoses+ intercooler
dump valve + bleed valve
regulator


I now want to start on the build using a standard 998cc engine as mentioned in several posts on this site.

because my buget is rather tight i am sourcing parts first before starting the actual work.
I am also currently finishing a na mini so this is sort of the next step

my mayor concern is finding a decent head and doing the work on it. I have decided to source a 12g940 head for the build.

Can anyone advise me on where to buy revised turbo 12g940 head adjusted for a 998cc setup?
i have a machine guy nearby that does revisions, but he's not interested in tuning engines as he has too much work on his hands.

or alternatively, how can i go about it myself and what do i have to keep in mind.

I am also not touching the engine at this stage because i want to have it running first and then go further with this project.

For now I only want to mod the head and have it back into the car.
Does it make sense not to do the pockecting for now and put the 12g940 straight on? remember i'm a noob at doing this kind of setup

can also anyone advise my on what type of plugs to fit in this kind of setup?

Any advice on this topic would be very much appreciated

If you want to have a go yourself get a copy of vizzards yellow book and havea good read.

Benross and Turbo Phil on this sie both produce excellent modified cylinder heads.

If you are using a standard 998 then and a 12G940 head then you will need dished pistons. Opening up the 940 chambers to the required 28cc is not a good idea on the 998. It may be better to use a decomp plate. Better still use a 12G295 head. You will not find a head to do what you want, you will need to have one modified.

A facet pump is unlikely to be suitable, you need an injection type roller vane pump.

As wil says, get a 12G295. It will be more than capable of delivering enough power to run into transmission issues so a 940 is not needed. The 295 will also require little or no chamber mods. He is also right about the fuel pump. Get one for a Metro turbo. I think the Bosch number ends in 044 but a search will confirm that.

Also, don't bother with an oil cooler. Virtually nobody here runs one. They just take up IC space.

does anyone have a 12g295 head lying around, i suppose it is not a straight swap, if i find an unmolested head i need to skim it and flow all ports right?

i already used the 12g295 head in a previous build and it was very satisfying, but the heads themselves are hard to find here in belgium,
they are of a mk1 998cc cooper... and there are not many around anymore.

what the oil cooler is concerned i would place it under the car, i saw this on a turbo van at the classica essen show in germany

it looked tough...and the additional cooling can only help.

You don't want to skim a 295 head for forced induction. It gives a very good (i.e. low) compression ratio as standard.

true, the lower the compression the better, but if you buy an old, left in the barm for odd years, head this will certainly need to be done i suppose.

anyway i started my quest towards another 12g295 hehe

i would have the head checked and skimmed if needed, a better gasket seal is better than ~1/2cc lost imo
my 1st turbo engine was a gasket monster, im doing everything to stop that this time

a quick update on how things are going for the moment

I am missing
the two bolts that mount the plenum on the carb
does anyone know the thread of these?
also the hollow bolts that fit into the t2 turbo

anyone know where i can find one online?

intercooler
i am planning to use the intercooler of a vw polo 1,4
does anyone have any experience with it?

now i, am gonna pre-assemble the lot to see if i am missing some other bits and bobs

i have another question regarding the parts,
in my garage i have a 998cc a block and an 998cc a+
what would be the most suitable for a turbo build?

i figured the a block as it has dished pistons fitted as standard.

can anyone advise before i take it apart and start drilling the jet holes etc in it?
