Germini, black forrest

Well, thought it might be time to show my Mini to TM :) Not that it's something special, it's doesn't even have forced induction... I hope it's allowed here nevertheless *wink*

It's a 1984 Mayfair Sport, a german market limited edition. It was the last model Mini to come with reasonably sized wheels from the factory sold in germany. And the first (& last *happy*) with 165/70-10 tyres.

I bought it in 2003, after it turned out that the '76 I was going to restaurate had a badly distorted shell (accident damage) and too many bodge repairs. I got it for 800€ - with no rust apart from the sills and some minor holes in the door skins. Gearbox got new bearings, the 998 got new gaskets and a re-hone, new clutch, new sills, a '92 Cooper SPI interior, centre speedo. All with the help of a very skilled Mini-mechanic.

And then I got my driving license. 2005 saw a Stage 1 kit, 2006 a 'smal' 1275. In 2009 the gearbox of the 1275 needed some work. This time I overhauled it myself for the first time - went surprisingly well. Apart from some gear selecting issues (faulty baulk rings!?). So out again after no 5 miles. 2nd try went well. Since I didn't like the 3.1:1 diff, I changed it to the 3.21:1 - which is just right.

The engine got a MG cam, a Inno Cooper head & rockers, flowed HIF6 carb, modified Metro dizzy. And a slightly worked MG intake manifold, LCB and RC40. Compression ~10.5:1. What to say - much more fun than the 'old' 1275! Pulls strong up from 2000 to almost 7000. Topped at 110mph (GPS) - not too bad, I guess. Not for a tired old piece of cast iron *happy* Realy big fun to have a Mini with a little grunt. *need more*

Next step will be twin HS4 carbs on a JanSpeed manifold. Had to make some adaptor plates to fit the HS carbs. All hand made with a saw, file & drill.

Fully crowded engine bay (horrible, isn't it!?*oh well*)

The car:

Home made centre clock thingy wiht Triumph gauges:

At the moment I'm building a 998 for it. 12G940, MG cam, fully worked HS4 or Fish carb (can't decide) and stuff. 3,76 diff - should be a screamer. Need to save some money to get me a longer 1st gear, though. *wink* The reason to go back for a 998 is: the 1275 needs some work and more go-fast stuff *hehe!*

And then there's the ultra-long-term-project...

Yeah, so basicaly I'm building three engines for the car *happy* A mate allready suggested to use Velcro strips as engine mounts *hehe!*

And if I find a moment of muse I might put my babies on the Mini. But I'm rather keeping them dry & save in the beed-room *hehe!*

5.75" Momos. Took me 5 years to get a set 8-)

Cheers,
Jan

Is the leverage ready for the twin carb?

(Auf deutsch *smiley*: Hast für den Doppelvergaser das Gestänge auch schon gebastelt, damit die Dinger schön synchron laufen?)

Cheers guys! :) Looks a lot better on the pictures, though *Nerd*

@akirch:
I still havent found a satisfactory solution. But I'm at it (slowly as ever *hehe!* ). I wish I had your work shop *wink*

@pinkyandnobrain:
It's indeed a bit problematic. And it was expensive and time consuming to legalise the engine & disc brakes (spend a whole afternoon with the TÜV engineer). But it's not impossible if you talk with them at a sensible level and involve the engineer from the beginning. But twin carb or cam will certainly going to be interesting....... *oh well*

Like this *hehe!* http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=353280 good old trusty chain hoist!

Oh joys! Got a part of the puzzle for the 1275's next gearbox. I was never happy with the A+ gear ratio spread. Especially 1st is too short, even with a 3,21 - for my likings that is. So this shouls sort things:

NOS and still in it's wax coating *Nerd* Anyone got a NOS DAM3167...? *hehe!*

Cheers,
Jan

PS: btw. Somerford Mini Spares - much recommended! Very friendly and caring personel! :)

Hi! No, it's still not finished. Shame on me! But I know how I'm going to do it. Just need something to put a bit metal together (aka. a welding machine) :)

Good news is that I finaly found a NOS DAM3167 to make a complete helical C/R gearbox w. A+ mainshaft. Thanks again!!!

But hey - even with on carb on the Nordschleife it's fun anyway *happy* (untill you run out of fuel *Punch* )

Very cool car !

Different engines : what about a front end for each engine ?
It can be in and out quite fast

TUV :
In France too, modifications are forbidden, we just do them and try our best not to get involved in an accident.
You can get away form the test with a little bit of retrofitting or a bribe but if you ever get caught in an accident, you're in serious trouble !

Don't give me ideas! *happy* If I remove the brake booster, it would be about 2 hours to change the complete unit. I guess that's fast enough.

That's why I try to make it more and more legal, even if it'll cost me a fair few quid. Geting the engine legal was over 150€ and 2h at the TÜV center. But hey, it's all officiall & approved now :) Many things are possible with the TÜV if you present them the facts and talk to and with them. :) (unless you'r unlucky and the TÜV tester is an a$$hole.... *happy**oh well*)

Hi!

Aaaand I'm back in the 998 leaque. The 1275 died of compression loss due to water damage and general age related wear... Actually - the bores are so worn out you could move the piston so far that half the top ring was exposed *surprised*

To bridge the gap untill I build the next 1275 (or maybe 1293), I quickly put together a 998 replacement engine.

Stuck a 940 head on top, put in a std. 1275 cam. No pockets in block, valves clear the block without them. Compression calculated at min. 10.2 to max. 10.5:1. Which sounds about healthy. :) Stuck a HS4 on top, MiniSpares manifold (borrowed) and in it went.

Basically the engine, gearbox and head were free - biggest cost was the head gasket and a tube of sealant *hehe!*

I had to modifie the water pump to fit the head, though...

So - considering it cost me not more than ~40€ (for gaskets & sealant mainly) - I'm surprised how well it goes! :) I think that engine can easily keep up with a std. 1275. But needs a lot of revs to do so. The 3,76:1 was certainly a wise choice (and surely contributes a great deal to the 'go!').

Only need to change the valve springs, as it doesn't rev past 6500 (valve chatter)... But basically; I'm happy. And the outcome couldn't be any better *happy*

And now I'm collecting a bit of money to build EvoIII of the 1275 :)

Cheers,
Jan
