Well where do i start...

originally it was a bog standard spi cooper, then i blew that engine up and got a 1293 spi lump which blew the old gearbox up. so i took the engine out ready for a sccr gearbox and then thought, ill do this properly and get a turbo...

so i brought a turbo lump of a member on here, and took it for a strip to decide what it needs and a rebuild, i was going to keep it at the spec it was sold to me as but sadly it wasnt that spec in any way, well after a bit of a consultation and a few decisions the engine spec was chosen, its consists of...

(new turbo.... get guessing *tongue*)
1380cc.
omega pistons with 11cc dish.
standard rods, stress releaved balanced and arp studs.
crank reground, cross drilled and hardened.
avonbar ph2 cam.
kent dupplex adjustable lightweight timing chain.
straight cut drops.
vandervall bearings (probably spelt wrong)
x pin diff.
2.76 FD.
ally flywheel
ally backplate
fully worked head with 28cc chambers, larger valves and 11 arp studs.
enlarged turbo elbow.
flowed exhaust manifold.
paddle clutch.
SCCR gearbox with larger uprated layshaft.
2 core minispares rad with hot climate fan.
recon pressed rockers.
oil cooler.
megajolt.
full reconned carb.
maniflow 2 " downpipe into a 2 3/4 system.
john flan plenum.


etcetc

chose this opposed to a 1293 in the hope of a tiny bit less turbo tag and a little more usable/ lower end power. will be using a standard T3 for now, will change in the future but im not sure what turbos are best for what so does any1 have any recomendations, i dont want a really laggy engine,but dont want a sissy engine either so a sortof midrange turbo? any ideas

any advice will be welcome... *wink*

Beautiful car! I like the mk1 grille, overiders and arch combo.

When you say biggest dish possible, do you need it? there was a topic on here recently about 18cc pistons with a standard head giving a relatively low CR. Maybe you would be better getting smaller dished pistons and putting the volume in the head (as you hinted that the head would change later)

mini13: yep a marshall jtm45 relic re-issue and a marshall vs102r which is what that pedal belongs to *wink*

thanks garyOS *happy*, i do love the retro look, the only major thing its missing is 10"ers but i think id rather have bigger brakes than 10" wheels.

from what i read it wont have as big dish as some of the 1293 pistons so it shouldnt have too lower compression. will get the head modded to suit the engine rather that get it fully opened up.

oh and views on megajolt or other ignition packages... rough prices? will the standard turbo dizzy loose me alot of power? is better ignition a must on an engine like this or is this something i could just get later on as and when sort of thing...

EDIT: With regard to ignition, you wont lose any peak power using a dizzy. You can maximise power everywhere with megajolt rather than having to compromise power to prevent det. It is the only solution for anything with different boost levels, turbo, cam or cubic capacity than a standard metro turbo.

Well, obviously there are other ignition systems but I have no experience with them

reading this has got me thinking along the lines of if the low CR is in the pistons then you can get the cylinder head skimmed and re-opened if your gasket go's so having the low cr in the pistons will mean a longer life for the head as it is not already at its maximum opening... am i right in thinking this?

Yeah, that makes perfect sense alright. That is one way of thinking of it. Skimming after a head gasket generally takes very little out of the chambers though

any 1 for advice on the turbo, alot of people seem to be saying bad about the old t3 lol

GT1752 is the turbo of the moment. I personally wouldn't build an engine with a T3 as they are a bit old hat now. Nick fitted a GT2056 which may take your fancy. He posted RR figures recently. Also, I think it was T2clubby who had good success with a hybrid T2

im guessing its got a fair bit if maching involved to fit a different turbo on the metro setup?

gt1752 - gt2056

is the 2056 the bigger of the two? and if so does that necesarily make it more laggy.

am i right in saying the t2 would also be old hat aswell now, as far as hybrid goes it dosnt mean alot to me as im new to turboss *oh well* .

Well the T2 is older but it's less laggy than the T3 simply because it is smaller. It ultimately makes less power though.

Yes, the GT2056 is the bigger of the two. Check out Nicks recent posts to see how it behaves. Fitting the GT1752 onto a Metro manifold just requires the mounting holes to be notched. Very simple

those dyno printout are very impressive to say the least, i dont think my engine is quite as high spec as that lol *tongue* liking the idea of the gt1752 as i dont think my engine will be a mega high rever as the crank is standard apart from cross drilling and a recon so probably wouldnt get full use from a gt20. :)

if the holes just need a niffle i might pop round my local scrappies and find a saab (think im right in saying saab) with an apropriate gt17....

actually think it would be wiser to get megajolt first then a better turbo when needs be? but gt17 definity sounds good.

Yes, prioritising the megajolt is the safest bet. As you say, the turbo can be upgraded later

getting my metro turbo brake setup this weekend.

engine will be ready by next weekend.

getting help with the sills on the 17th.

its starting to come together.

hoping its on the road for l2b and mitp.

i dont like the thought of spending all this money on power and having a rotten car. i want it safe and solid, not to worried about asthetics this year just want it on the road safely, next year will be the year the shell go's away and gets a full restoration and paintjob.

well... update time.

welding is getting there with much help from neil, still another days work on the outers and some other areas:







and fetched my new brakes today off jamz (also have the hoses and greenstuff pads) hmm red or black calipers?!?! :





and snuck a photo of our Vdubs together (hope he dosnt mind me posting it):





will get started on the subby this week and atach some new bits to that before it get solid mounted into the shell :)
