Just discovered this... Pretty crazy twin turbo 4 cylinder inline engine:

"To power the car. Fiat have patented a brand new cylinder head. As a twin turbocharged engine was being used, Fiat had to revise the layout of the cylinder head to improve the suitability for the set up. Normally, the inlet valves are on one side of the layout, exhaust valves on the other, but this makes a twin turbo engine difficult to produce. On the new unit, the four valves of each cylinder are laid out in a cross pattern with the inlet and exhaust valves alternated on each side of the cylinder head. An exhaust manifold can therefore be placed on each side of the engine with the inlet manifolds entering from the center, either independently or combined into one. The system is known as the double reverse flow and, as the intakes combine into one near the valve, leaving just three gas flows for each cylinder, the head has been christened the Triflux." Text taken from here: http://homepage.virgin.net/shalco.com/lancia_gp_s.htm

That's about 600HP from 1.8l *hehe!* Pretty interesting stuff and ery unusual head design!

So - who's the first to make an Triflux A-Series head? *happy*

Cheers,
Jan

Awesome bit of kit, but your missing the really interesting info about the valve on one set of exhausts which closes diverting all the exhaust to one turbo to improve low down performance, then when that become restrictive the second exhaust opens and it uses both the turbos!

Some of the group B rally cars were doing some funky things.

leeds/wakefield.

If iv'e got it wrong i apologise , but i thought the s4 was both supercharged and turbo charged, [it was as fact]
but the engine above is twin turbo, [ was going to be used in group S] using one exhaust valve on reach side of the cylinder head to drive the two turbos,

a completely different setup to what was used in the s4

No carl, that's right. The S4 was a group B car and had both supercharger and turbo. This Triflux (sounds like a laxative, doesn't it? *happy*) engine was intended for group S (prototype racing) resp. the Lancia ECV which never raced since they canceled both group B & S...
