Well here is my mini which i bought as a 998 1986 mayfair with 6 months mot.



I had lots of fun driving it round as it was and then a friend from college gave me this metro turbo engine:



one piston had eaten its rings, other than that the rest was usable but very dirty.
I sent the block away for blasting and boring while i rebuilt the gearbox and fitted the new diff





I found some nice +60 11cc AE pistons, and had the crank reground balanced and nitrided. i got a KC500 cam (similar to the mg one i believe) and duplex chain gear.



Then i bought a 2nd hand vmax stage 4 turbo head to help it breathe and lower the compression a bit





I decided to go down the t2 route when i took the t3 out of its box and a load of brown sludge came out



As the engine was nearly ready i started checking the body for the usual











The previous owner made some incredible bodges all the holes were bridged with filler sanded and painted it seriously would of been easier and quicker to do it with metal.





The front end was beyond saving so was removed in favour of a 2 piece fibreglass clubby front.

Not seen Sump and Clutch housing black before, looks great in black, Engine is looking pucka !

Very good, you would have thought that the number of minis with that sort of body bodge would be small these days as they should have all rotted away.

Most of the rear of my mini was made of filler. Even the structural bits

Engine out, Bulkhead box in.

Its from a cinqucento, i couldnt believe how light it was!

Did you modify your bulkhead where the header tank is (the triangle bit) or is it just the picture?

No its bolted straight onto the inner wing brace, as high up as i could get it.

Any updates?

ive got alot of tiem for home build projects ..espcially to this standard.. ive got a soft spot for a clubby aswell..what i wouldnt give for a garage haha

Unfortunatly ive been stuck working on my daily recently so i havent been able to get much done. :(

I never used to be into clubbys but now i think they are ace.

Ive got a couple bits done to the front end, the grill needs a lot of work before it will fit.

Ive made the bracket to mount the intercooler to the rad just need to tie back to the brace bars.



Finally decided on plumbing the top hose and the turbo return to the header tank. Hopefully this will be sufficient for the cooling system to operate correctly.



I have a slimline fan on the way, does anyone know how the standard fiat rad switch works ie:
is it an open contact which closes when a certain temp is reached, turning the fan on?

Hi dan it is a relatively simple and cheap conversion and is definately worthwile. I pretty much followed Phil's guide:

I bought an adaptor plate off ebay (i think Paul S is currently obtaining some) cut the studs off and ground them flat, position the plate on the manifold and rotate slightly clockwise until the holes clear the existing studs. This also helps with the downpipe positioning.

Drill and tap the holes to M8, fettle the plate and manifold vanes to aid flow. Bolt the turbo on and rotate the compressor housing so it faces upwards.

I then ground back the edge of the plate to give a bit more clearance. i welded the plate to the manifold to guarantee a good seal, but i know of people who have just used a T3 gasket without problems. i welded it with dissimilar rods but i think some people have used MIG.

The Actuator also has to be rotated, i trimmed the original one and drilled/tapped new holes in the compressor housing. You can make your own bracket or even relocate it to the opposite side if you like.

Removed the rear valence, what a nightmare! One closing panel needs replacing but the other is fine



My radiator fan turned up this morning, its slim but there still isnt enough room for it. Im thinking about relocating the numberplate but im running out of space.

how about using a square plate, and locate it off to one side

What about behind the rad?

Ive got the starter and alternator just behind the rad, it will fit at the front with a bit more trimming.

Is a square plate accepted in an MOT?
