Hey all.

I have bought a turbo from ebay.
I have had a look at this today and have found what I think are some fairly nasty cracks.

The pictures just about show them.

They are bad enought to stop a good seal on the waste gate as the casting has cracked and distored here.

How bad is this?

This has cost me £95, is it time for a paypal despute?

Thanks Tom

Its a t2 from a R5

The bottom section has moved forward stopping the wastegate from making a good seat/seal. Wont this lose boost pressure?

The cracks are fairly bad when you look at them directly. The wastegate seat is distorted/uneven because of them.

Will this cause me problems?

Has your camera got a macro setting on it? Most do even mobile phones these days. You should be able to get a much better picture then.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

In the pictures you can see the darker section is where its leaking. I have cleaned it up for the pics but it was sooty here.

I have not seen a T2 without these crack, but I have not seen one where the cracks have moved a section of the cast and stopped the wastegate closing.

As already said, better pohtos will help.

here you go....

The worst crack has bits missing.

You can see the section that is lower than the rest of the seat here too.

Is this really anything to worry about or should I just leave it?

I am able to weld cast (mates got the right tools) would this be ok with such an application?
I have welded cast manifolds many times without too many problems.

Before considering welding it, check out the important bits, ie, shaft bearings, thrust bearing and both impellors.

Welding cast iron is a process with a random outcome so the trouble of doing it is only justified if everything else is perfect....

There is no play at all and everything looks in good order apart from the cracks

Near Paris - France

R5 people use to replace the casting by a diesel one that is thicker

Off a R19 Turbo diesel.

I don't know if you even have those in england ...

Rusty by nature
