What kind of valves are you using?

It seems as you haven't ported the valve throats. These are much more important than the area near the manifold face.

Its not finished yet mate.

I need a flexible extention to get into there.

Valves will be the standards... Its just a home brew jobbie to learn the basics.

Engine will be a 70-75bhp job

pop the valves out and get rid of the bosses that the valve guides sit in, theyre a huge restriction

I'm getting 112hp from 12 psi boost on my 998 with a totally standard 12G295. I have fitted 214N valves though.

So they are pretty good in standard fettle. I will be improving mine in the future.

Good on you for having a go. Last time I tried it, was on a crossflow head. after about 8 hours or so went straight through into a water way. :(

Thanks Guys

I have limited tools, time and money so the valves will stay and standard but I will work the throat area a little.

What do you mean by remove the bosses?

Do you mean the valve guide ends?

Sorry I am very new to this

The chambers are not completed yet and are still a little low on CC.
I am aiming for the same as a 12g295

If you can't fill a cylinder very well you'd better squeeze the heck of what is in here

So in my book, you either up the boost vs an engine with a better head (not good, too hot) or you up the compression ratio (good for economy).

IIRC Paul S was about an high comp low boost SBU, you'd better have a chat with him on output and what did he use as far as pistons and other stuffs.

dont go crazy on the ports,

concentrate on the valve gude bosses, throat and seats, these will make the most diference.

Garrett, the bosses referred to are the lumps sticking up surrounding the valve guide.Maybe a bit of caution here as the guide needs some support and, more importantly, contact, to get rid of the heat, especially on the exhaust side.
Any reduction will be a help. Have you read Vizard ? If not do have a look.

advice / ideas, whatever you want to call it

I understand you retain standart size valves.
This choice implies issues.
I try and list the issues and previous experiences from people on here to help you get the most of your setup.

The mention I made of a fake quote was my own : it says david Vizard in 1999 !!!
(he did write that actually)

Ahh, I see

It looked like you was talking about me with the quotes lol
Sorry bout that.

Thanks for the advice and I do realise that the potential is limited but my whole point of this is to learn basics without spending large sums of money.

When I think I can sort a head out without wrecking it then I will get a better casting and larger valves etc.

For now I'm just learning as I go with scrap parts and seeing what happens.

And the CC is now 28ml

This should see me good for the compression side of things.

Next will be to try and get a good throat?

Vizards Theory and Practice of Cylinder Head Modification is worth getting hold of, maybe a bit out of date, but it will take you in the right direction.

Ive done things a bit back to front and upside down but its all part of learning.

lol actually its looking good :)

the book above just gives more info on why things are done than the tuning BL's a series as its not specificly for one engine.
