After a slightly disappointing shoot out it was time to put the TT2 back on the rollers today. So it was off to NMS with as bleed valve and a MBC. To cut a long story short we managed to get it back to 15psi and 150+ bananas. Unfortunately we were unable to get any more boost. We suspect that the actuator was not strong enough to keep the wastegate shut or the bracket it is attached to is flexing. Anyway it was good to see 150 again and a bit of an investigation in the next few months should diagnose the problem and we will try again for 20psi. Here is a printout of the last run @ 15psi.

Great result, more power per boost than my 1293! Not that mine was very happy at the shootout.

what revs did the engine go to? 9K?

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

big respect to you buddy. It wasn't too many years ago we were getting that power on the same boost but from a 1293 engine. Top job lads

Axel and I attended this event. Apart from the very good power output, I was impressed with the reliability. They did 12 power runs, most in the 150-155hp range and that engine did not miss a beat.

Pity we could not get the boost higher than 15 psi. I'm sure that there is at least 180 hp there.

Whoever said 998s could not be turbocharged should eat their hat.

I also tried to get some temperature readings using a portable temperature gauge and taking surface temperatures on the turbo outlet pipe and the plenum. The intention was to back up the thermodynamic calcs and understand where all this power is coming from.

Anyway, the readings on the turbo outlet were in the range of 40-50 degrees C which basically means that it is not getting heated by the air passing through. The temperature should have been in the 90s.

The plenum temperatures never got above 30 degrees when the ambient was 21 degrees. Given that it sits above the turbo in a hot part of the engine bay at least suggests that the efficiency of the turbo and intercooler are very high.

Good result and plenty more to come.

It was revving to about 7700. On the shoot out day the rev limiter was set to 7200 at which point it retarded the ignition to 5deg advanced. Hence why the power dropped off. This time it was set to 8k, but with no intention of getting there.

They are some very impressive figures. Both power and temperature! Great news

That's very impressive!

Was it done with the bonnet of again? This would probably effect the temp readings as the heat can escape more easily

as a comparison ben ,

whats your total ignition timing on 15 psi?

are the mjlt timing numbers correct to the real numbers at the engine ?

and what cr ?

On full boost it runs 24deg advanced. As far as I know the actual fugure and the set figure are matched. cr is 8.5:1.

If you want the electronic copy let me know. I was very impressed that about 3.5 to 4psi increase in boost achieved a 25bhp increase.

yes that would be great ben ,it looks like my engine on a safe 15 degrees timing on the same cr may well pick up a bit of power with some more advance as i suspected .

To be honest we thought that 24 deg was quite conservative.

Here is the last run we did.

We have never spent much time with the timing. We did advance upto 24 when we fitted the MS, but we were concerned about det so we thought we would stop and leave it on the safe side.
