I was hoping to create a list of what exactly what turbos people have used on their 998s, where they got them from (i.e. which car?) and what manifold they are using.

Also any opinions of their set-up, and if it's for road or race.

I have all the bits I need for my 998 turbo except the turbocharger itself so I hope to decide which to use from this nice list you're all going to make for me. (I'm using a metty manifold).

Cheers

Well if you are using the metty manifold you'll need an adaptor plate in most cases to get a differnt turbo on. Not a big problem.

So......

Renault 5 T2 on Mirage manifold for road use is great, 12psi is really the linit of the compressor on a 998.

GT17 off a saab 95 on a metty manifols, great for race use, but maybe a bit to high a boost threshold for road use.

Metty T3, potential for use on a race car, where you never dip below 4500rpm, but not much use otherwise.

Other options are GT15s GT20s and there are a couple of IHI turbos which look good on paper.

What he said^^^^^.

I'm running an R5 T2 on my 998. 12 psi boost is all in by 4000rpm. Makes for a good high speed cruiser without the noise of straight cut gears.

I believe that the GT1548 is a modern equivalent of the R5 T2.

I have a GT1544S to run on my 1098. I haven't seen one used yet and there won't be any info until I get mine running. Who knows when that will be?

I'm going to try one of IHI from Subaru Legacy 2.5L biturbo. Both turbo a ball-bearing and very small. Very cheap in the US, got the pair for $135 last year. I'll likely have the car running by this summer.

I am also now going to try an IHI on a 998.

If all goes well I shall be in the car at Classic Le Mans. I'd say pop along to say hello, but it's as far for you as it is for us!!

Never been at Classic Le Mans. I'd come in Maserati but it's still too far. I'm lazy.

Oh well.

I presume you have the RHF4 of the Legacy, this is what I have/am getting. Seems to make sense as Subaru use them for one side of a 2.0 engine.

Yes they are RHF4, ball bearing.
I was quite sure the twin-turbo setup came from a 2.5 engine. Now I only find references at 2L engines. Anyway, these 2 turbos are staged and a bit different but nobody knows the exact spec.
The engine is known to lack smoothness, the staging seems to be a bit raw. So it's difficult to know how the power is distributed over turbos at high boost. And I still don't know which one to use.

Hi wil_h,
Did you get your IHI ?
I'm seriously looking at RHF3 from jap Kei cars. They are really tiny and on the paper should work up to 135hp (at least on the turbine side) but quite expensive. I'm sure they will work nice at low RPM but no idea how far they will push.
Similar turbos exist in TD02 format, but according Mitsu they would be too small.
The VF14 from Legacy I've got is a bit large, I can not use it without body mods, I'd like to avoid.

I asked that a while back... the general consensus was that it hasn't really been tried but expect it's not ideal.
A few concerns were raised: the exhaust gas temperature, the flow volumes and most often the mounting points are 3 stud so don't fit on a metty manifold

I tried a VNT15 from Golf TDI 110hp, very low boost 300mbar. Works very well on 10000km but petrol exhaust gas are really hot so it spins too much. I think a T2 is much like GT15, so probably too small. Or at least you'll need an external wastegate.
The temperature does not seem to be a problem according to many places on the web, neither oil-only cooling (unless you want be able to stop engine right after a run).
But there are many alternatives like small petrol IHI, diesel GT17 or GT20 (see recent posts) or many others.

Yes I now have the RHF4, physically very similar to a T2. Should be up and running in a month or so.

All my Gt17s have come from Ebay. The T2 and GT15 and RHF4 came from this forum.

IHI RHF4 AS12 Turbo SHIBAURA / New Holland Tractor N844
IHI RHF4 AS12 Turbo CAT 247 Series Skid Loaders

Yes I think that's right.

If IHI are anything like Garrett, the spec of the turbo such as A/R trim etc can remain the same with the fitment being the only variable for different specs.

well I hope so.

I think I'll go with the Isuzu 4JG2 RHF4, looks fine and water cooled.
Fitted new valve guides yesterday. I hope winter won't last all the year, my garage is not cooled.

Well I was cheated on ebay. 4JG2 did not exist with RHF4, it was fitted with RHF/B5.
The ebay vendor sold me a Chineese copy crap, going to a dispute.

What do you mean by stage kit? You can get a stage 1 kit for non turbo minis, but these are no use for turbo applications.

There are plenty of options in this thread for turbo's to use, but by far the simplest for installation is an R5 T2 on a Mirage manifold.
