I'm building a 1293cc A series with the following spec:
rebored +20 thou, decked, steel centre main strap and modified for 11 stud head
Renault 5 Garrett T2 hybrid turbo on a Mirage manifold
Cast Omega pistons with 10cc dish
Avonbar Ph2 cam
Alloy vernier duplex timing gear
Ultralight flywheel
Lightened backplate with lugs machined down 1.5mm
Grey diaphram
SC drop gears
Fully rebuilt gearbox with X-pin diff and centre pick-up
3.1:1 final drive
Megajolt ignition

Pictures of the build so far:

It took me 4 hours to remove the idler gear bearing race, In the end I welded a bolt into the race and tightened a nut down over a socket to draw it out.

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

It's going in my 1990 Flame Red which is a bit of a rusty shed to be honest! mechanically it is very good though and I have spent a lot on it over the 4 years I've owned it. I'm just repairing the shell when necessary and when it gets too bad I'm going to reshell it.

Sounds like a well though out spec, will give a powerful, reliable, driveable motor

Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

I think the CR is going to be about 8.25:1 with a 28cc head. I didn't so much aim for it as end up with it, it seems a little lower than the average but at least it should allow for plenty of boost. Hopefully it will still be ok off boost, I will just have to wait and see.

should be ok,

if it ends up a little sluggish of boost its no bigie to pull the head and get it skimmed.

What boost will you be running? What power are you expecting?

I don't really know, I was planning to run it in then see what worked well. I want it to be drivable but it's also tempting to try and get as much power as possible. Realistically I'm thinking 150hp would be very good once it's been run in and set up.

I currently have a NA 1275 with kent 286 cam so I think this will be a big improvement in drivability whatever.

looks really nice, just one worry and that's you seem to have a normal gearbox, so just take it easy from the traffic lights *wink*

Best 1/4 mile 13.2 seconds @116 mph

The paint is the Classic Car Colours BMC Green, Mini Spares, Moss, Frost etc all sell it. I used the brush on for the block and the spray for the rocker and timing covers, they both seem to give an excellent finish but I was really impressed with the spray.

It is indeed a standard gearbox with the exception of the diff and drop gears. Is there a rough figure of HP or torque at which they are know to fail? I have searched but I couldn't find much.

Thanks for the suggestion Paul but I have a set of 10x6 Cosmic wheels. I just can't bring myself to spend the money on S brakes or 4 pots.

is that the trigger wheels bolt on crank wheel?

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

I've made a bit of progress over the last few days, I've made an oil return and an actuator bracket. The actuator bracket mounts on the exhaust flange of the turbo, I was going to make something similar to Nic's but I found it limited access to the manifold nuts too much.

I've started mounting a radiator from a Nova, it seems to fill the space quite well but at the moment the starter, alternator, bonnet catch and cold air feed don't fit, it looks as though I will be able to keep the external bonnet release though.

I got my backplate bake from having 1.5mm taken off so the clutch is now on, almost looks like a complete engine now. I've just got an old head on there for the moment so I can trial fit the turbo and make some brackets.
DSC00861 by Matt4475, on Flickr
I've also taken the old engine out, made some brackets for the radiator, wired up the megajolt and the fuel pump relay.
DSC00864 by Matt4475, on Flickr
I've got a Matiz alternator as the old one was very close to the radiator. I took about 4.2mm off the water pump lug to get it to line up and made a spacer for the other side. I also made something to join up with the old adjustable bracket, it doesn't look too pretty and it's not the perfect solution but I think it should work, I want to make sure it clears the radiator before I spend time making something decent. I tried to measure how much clearance I had gained with this alternator, it looks like it's only about 15mm.

Also this arrived today from Benross
DSC00865 by Matt4475, on Flickr
It didn't stay looking like that for long, it's already had 2 coats of BMC green. It will be going on the engine as soon as the paint is dry.

Ah the old red undercoat trick. Keeps the 10 banana power gains of the red paint.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.
