We will be racing at Harewood (near Harrogate) this weekend. It is normally a good event and is part of the British Hillclimb Championship so lots of very fast single seaters, plus the normal mix.

Well a great weekend, and not a drop of rain, despite the forcast.

We had 4 runs on the Saturday, I span on two of them and gathered up a massive sideways moment on a third. Managed a 66.37.

Today We had one practice and two timed runs, My best run was a 65.89 with a massive moment on the grass for 50yards. With a Bike negined locaterfield in the class though I'd have had to have found 10 seconds to take a class wictory.

I would sum it up as a scruffy weekend, but there's only one way to find the limits, and that's go right past them occasionally!!!

Yes, the event was not very busy, we had had our last run by 2.30. I have to echo Wil though it was a great weekend, such an enjoyable hill to drive.

i too poped up boys but by the time i'd had an ice cream and wathched what i thought was first timed runs, ,

you boys had packed up and fooked off,

i htought the atmosphere was dire and the entry list seriously lacking in anything interesting in tin tops.

I couldn't agree more Carl. But what's the point in turning up in a tin top when all theee Modprod classes are dominated by locaterafields

will, i thought they had sub devided the mod prod so that the kit car struff had a class of its own and the tin tops were left alone, or has this been dropped due to low numbers .

also do you have a slight torque steer thing going on,lol

Yes there are two classes B licence events, but only the one at A licence events.

Torque steer is not a majour issue, but out of Farmhouse bend there is a bump and it caught me out on the last run.

Did you see us run then? My last run was pants as I went too fast into Quarry and ended up sideways and virtually stopped before pootling across the line.

It's shite , the class structure !!!!!!
totally agree with you Carl - where is the diversity of cars ?
Been banging on about this , on and off , for years to various organisers , committee types , generally it falls on deaf ears ,
they only seem interested in the endless parade of same looking kitcars /kitcars with wings [oms, jedi etc] and single seaters .

Ben - was there any 1400-2000 saloons ?
where their times any where close to yours ?

I am thinking of trying to get a change in the saloon class to read :

'Mod prod saloons up to 2000cc'

[ie any saloon up to 2000cc]

If this were accepted, it would also allow forced induction 1400cc cars , not originally produced as over 1400cc models , circumventing the stupid rule that means mini's etc can't go in the next higher capacity saloon class

leeds/wakefield.

that idea is a bit like the old special saloon class form 20 years back,

it was quite disparing to see such a poor selection of tin tops,

plus i only recognised two people from when i used to compete back in the 90's, Peter herbert and is earstwhile engineer Rus Coburn, two very decent fella's

The problem is not the clubs it is the MSA and next year it only gets worse, IMO. However, with limited production the ERA should be eligible so you could run a Mini in upto 2000cc. Most clubs do split sports and saloon cars so we are not always against the westfields. Either way it is not great at encouraging people into the sport when the first three class records are held by the same car.

the reason for proposing a change to the class structure is that the organisers / clubs still determine classes [ but within the msa catagory structure ]

This is true, but the blue book does not make the demarcation very clear so it is random across different clubs. It is also very contradictory.

The class split is fine at 1400cc! What is not so good is the use of locatafields in the class at all and to add bike engines into the pot much worse. This why I stopped doing the Brighton Speed trials one year met Peter Herbert's seven with 1400BDA and then a load of bike engine Sylva Strikers etc. It turned the class from a really competitive close run thing into all the tin tops being 2+ seconds slower over the 1/4 mile which is a lot!

Out of interest ,
how do your times compare to the 1400-2000 saloons
[bet your more competitive with them than 1400 mod prod ?]

The problem here is that you can have a 2000cc locaterfield, so the same problem exists. Like I said the forst three classes are class records by a locaterfiels, just with different engines. If you look at our car, ignoring locaterfields, then it is reasonably competitive at most events and within a second or so of the hill record (apart from Olivers mount where Wil holds it).

maybe i'm a bit lost ?

Is it only the Midland rounds that still have mod prod cars to 1400,

but a saloon class 1400-2000 and sports car 1400-2000

i'm going by my program from Prescott couple weeks ago

There is a mix, at some events all saloons and spaceframe cars are lupmed together, as harewood this weekend. However, at the next harewood, they are separated.

There is no such class as modified production as such as defined by the Blue Book. It's either Modified limited production or modified specialist production. BOth have the same technical regs, but only 100 cars in 12 months need to have been sold to qualify for limited and 20 cars for specialist.

Clubs can run the mod prod class under these regs, but they can only make the eligibility more restrictive, not less. So if the club don't want locaterafields in the modprod class they have to separate them in the supplementary regs.

As I have said above, proper cars and kit cars shold be seperated, otherwise evrry class will eventually be made up of kit cars, not true production cars, and what's the fun in that?
