West Sussex - dreaming of forced induction!

Hi Guys,

Im building a 998 supercharged engine for my dad, he wants to be able to rev the nuts off it from time to time so i guess it needs building as a screamer.

Now my dilemma is what to do with the crank, obviously it wants lightening for a bit of extra acceleration but is it worth wedging and all that malarky???

Oh and whos the best peeps to talk to about getting it done for sensible money? I think MED wanted 250 to machine my crank but cant remember what that was for now............

i think the only debateable thing is blading as it removes the counterweight, as far as the rest of is concerned it can only help, but to be only, as the 998s a tough little cookie already, i was just going to get mine hardened and balanced.

MED will be one of the cheapest for crank work, Fastcarl on here might be able to beat them though

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

So, x-drill, lighten, wedging and tuftriding then

What is considered revving the nuts off?

Standard crank is fine to 7k no probs. A grind and harden would be the most I would do.

When you say grind what do you mean?? I want it to survive to beyond 8K in short bursts, was thinking if it was lightened it would pick up that little bit quicker???

I just meant grind the journals before hardening them.

8k, wow. Well I must admit that my 998 sees 8k occasionally (ususllay by accident!) but generally 7k is a maximum.

What's your planned spec for the engine otherwise, blow through, suck through, cam? head? CR etc.

Oh I see LOL
The journals look fine (low mileage engine) but I will give them a good going over with a micrometer to check for ovaling.

Basic spec is blow thru Injection, MG metro cam and a well ported 202. I havent worked out the CR yet as I dont know how much meat can be taken out of the head or dished into the pistons.

Aiming to use a M45 and max it out at 15000rpm at 8K engine revs so about 1.9:1 ratio.

Maybe a Canems ECU or megasquirt to control it all.

Sounds ok or am I stoopid???

I always get confused trying to calculate psi on an SC engine. However, running an M45 at 15000 rpm will pump enough air for over 200bhp at 8k on a 998; which is maybe a little optermistic. This would also be at 30 odd psi, which is way beyond the capabilities of the M45.

For a more sensible/achievable 120 to 130 bhp at 8k, you only need a bit over 300lb/min, which you'll get running the SC at 1:1.

Someone might want to check my maths though.

You'll be running about 60% efficient maybe a little better lower in the rev range, so the bigger the better.

10" and quite thick would keep most of us happy I guess, not sure about it being square!!!!!!

Sorry, couldn't help myself.
