bit of a dillema ,

in trying to upgrade the brakes on a mk1 ,3.5 inch wheels .(i think) ,
it has single leading shoe drums at the moment ,
which ,aparently ,have about as much effect on braking as opening your window, sticking your head out ,and whistling ..*frown**surprised*

so i thought hmm, how about some 7.5 coopernosity ,,well they dont seem to fit under these wheels ,and so im down to ,either twin leading shoe drums ,which apparently drive one mad with the need for constant adjustment ...or 7 inch early cooper discs ,which appear to be made from feeler guages and moped calipers .
have i got this all wrong ? or is that a good summing up ?

thanks
robert

I have the standard 7.5" cooper S brakes and I slip a set of 10x3.5" wheels on for MOT purposes and they fit on mine. OK it must be pretty snug under there but it still clears nicely.

Keith Timpson had the eary cooper set up on his van a few years back. I can't recall how good they were though. one benefit is that they don't seem to affect the track width as much as the S set up If I recall right so no need for arches

7" Cooper discs are not very good, but you don't have to adjust all the time. That's teh only upside.

7.5" Cooper S discs fit perfectly under regular steel wheels, obviously as it was delivered this way from the factory. These will increase track with by 1" per side though.

not all 3.5 steel wheels are the same, S wheels have round holes between the stud flange thingy and the rim where standard wheels have slots, dimensions would be the same though. 4.5 S wheels had 1" more inset and 4.5 reverse rims have 1" more offset

paul ,what i did ,was get a s hub and disk and caliper wack it all together on the bench ,and then try to put a wheel on it ,but maybe i got it all a bit different to how it sits on the car ..

thanks russel , thats good info .

i had a bit of an experiment today with a fiesta caliper ,and a modern 8.4 hub and flange ,,and it looksl ike with about 3mm spacing , ican get it all to miss ,time will tell.

i had 8.4 dics turned down to 7.5 and the 4 pot caliper moved in a bit, i could fit loads of 10" wheels but not the steels

Robert, I knew with your track record the S setup would be too "off the self" for you! let use know how you get on.

I have F-Brakes on my car and the std steel wheels wont fit because the internal lip on the steel wheel catches the caliper. Like you say spacing the wheel out might work.

BTW they have been excellent brakes I run std premium pads, dot 5.1 and they worked great at castle coombe last year at the miniworld track day. even on the last lap I gave them some stick and they stopped great.

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

7.5 inch Cooper S brakes should fit MK1 wheels. Though if you have the early and dangerous spot welded (pre 1961) wheels, you may have a problem other than fitment.

Are the 7.5 inchers original or are they new/newish? The ones I have on my Mk1 needed a slight bit of grinding on the edges of the caliper, and you needed to arrange the pad cotter pins correctly to assure proper clearance.

As far as the 7 inch Cooper disks go, you would be better served to install twin leading shoe drums than to install those.

i think Robert will try something a little different, def dont use 7" cooper discs as the crap and twin leading shoe is better, if you go 7.5" S discs then get the minispares carbon metalic pads, they are amazing, easily worth the money, good bite, light peddal and dont fade (and no i dont work for minispares!)

I would't use Carbon Metallic pads on a road car. Albeit being good, they make a SHITLOAD of dust..

If anyone is selling 7" rubbish brakes, I'm happy to buy *happy*
