Ordered some parts from Digikey US on Tuesday to build up Jean's new Quad Driver/COP board. By mistake really as I thought I was on the UK website :$

They turned up this morning.

That's less than 48 hours from Michigan to Northants.

Still had to pay UPS the VAT at the doorstep before he would hand over the parcel. But at least it was just the 15% VAT and no handling charge.

You probably were on the UK website..... it's still shipped from Michigan but just priced and ordered in GB£.

I compared them to RS and Farnell just recently (to buy all the bits I didn't already have for the Jimstim and some parts towards the second Megasquirt) and Farnell were the cheapest (by quite a bit).

With DigiKey it was a £12 delevery (unless the order was over £50) and Farnell was free over £20. Plus, with DigiKey, the hassle of VAT this end.

Having said that, I spent a lot of time sorting out the right codes for Farnell and RS whereas Megasquirt and most others give you the DigiKey part numbers so you can price it in seconds.....

I might try them next time if the order is over £50.

I have used them in the past and the tax is a pain. You do think it is a UK site. However, delivery and stocked parts is much better than the normal players.

Mainly I use Farnell now.

Well I said I might try them "next time" and at the current GB£ vs US$ their prices were slightly better than Farnell and they had a couple of parts that Farnell didn't have the exact item, just an equivilant.

The UK website quotes in GB£ but its obviously based on a straight currency conversion.

With all the other bits I needed I could make their £50 barrier for free postage, Farnell would have beaten them on total price (inc. delivery) otherwise.
Paying the VAT at this end with UPS is a bit of a hassle but it's better than the ripoff by Parcelforce with handling fees too from other USA suppliers.

Two working days delivery and tracking showed it went through four USA airports and one UK one to get to me !!!!

I live round the corner from CPC (part of Farnell) so I can just pop in to get any bits I need - they're a bit slow at picking the parts sometimes though. Don't think I've ever been in there for less than 30 minutes! Very good prices on components though - just don't buy anything for a computer from them, they're prices are about 6 months behind everyone else.

Digikey have a great range but their shipping rates are crazy. I guess its because it has to be shipped over, but for that price you might as well use a local shop and get twice as much for the same price.

Their shipping rates are crazy, BUT, if you hit £50, it's free now.

And it's not difficult to hit £50 with the price of some chips now, eg, ignitors.
