Well its about time i made a proper build thread for my mini so here it starts. the plan is to make a nice turbo motor for evenings, weekends and track days. the general plan is to run 1bar of boost//15psi, have a reasonable long fd 2.9, CRSC gear box, front mounted intercooler and radialor ignition would be mega jolt.

here are some pics of the slow progress, unfortunatlly i started this a while back so the pictures are form quite big time gaps.

from the begining to the end with comentry.

The car when i got it

Started off by stripping the headlining and bits of interior out, then getting the Engine out

From then on its been mostly a parts gathering sitution with not much work being done visibly to the car

Which moves on to today with help from this man i started to re-locate the wiering inside of the car ready for bulk head box area to be cut out and bulk head box to be welded in.

Now that im currently unimployed i can start to do more work to the mini. I have also decided to stop spending money on silly crap so i can really start to get going with this project :)

all comments welcome

don't let your head drop about being unemployed mate - still loads you can do without spending to progress your project.

i must admit i don't think the angle of the handbrake was the greatest idea *wink* lol...luckily i didn't sit on it!

You should make a list of things you want doing before it gets welded so you can keep a check list going, also dig out what you want sandblasting and we'll have a bash at that tomorrow.

looking good - keep it up as I'm sure another job will come along soon that will take you away from it again

I've found breaking the project down into manageable sections is helping me - say works to be done in a day.

the last pic took about 30-40 seconds to do, not long at all. what did take along time was lunch and getting a new air line as the one we had broke :)

well, after loosing my job and being lazy and not doing anything i have finnanly got around to working on my mini again. yesterday with help from ollie (bulk head box fomex stencil) and my dad (light holder and marker) i cut the hole for my BHB to go in. still have a little to grind off the nearside of the cut before it sits neatly in.

more pics will come once everything is all flush :)

finished off the grinding to allow for the bulkhead box to go in, had to modify it slightly, not sure if it was a poor measurement by me or just it being abit off, anyways here are the pics :)

You should also chop the piece on the right off. It will hinder the fitment of your induction hose.

it has been along time since i have worked on my mini, loosing my job getting a girfriend moving out and a few other setback means i havent done much to my mini in along time. this year is a year of change for me, i dont have alot of money so all that will be done will be small.

since i started this thread the plans have changed abit, will still be a road worthy warrior and an a-series but with an ally head fi and a turbo. plan really for this year is get welding done (bulkhead box, mk1 light plate(pass side), small repair on rear quater), get it back on its wheels for easyer movement, finish off lightening the shell drilling lots of holes and cutting bits off, creating a rear beam from the original subby, get rear coilovers to match the front.

over the next few weeks i will be getting pics up of where it stands now compeared to before and hopefully will be weekly progress on bits and bobs

also anyone near swindon interested in some beer or beer money to do some welding???

Done some more to this today, i had forgoten that i gave up getting the bitumen sound deadaning off the floor as i was getting to cold to do it, i finished this off today and was amazed by how much it weighed.

I managed to get behind the drivers chair finished off, the rear seat base and about 1/4 from behind the passangers side, all of this weighed in at a massive 3.4kg for just these small biys thats not including the front and 3/4 from passangers rear section!!

Next on my list was to start working out where to lighten the doors so i have marked it up with pen where i plan to remove metal from(plan to use plastic windows), after this i marked up where to cut to remove the rear seat as i want to leave abit just incase it goes abit wrong.

I have now started to draw up where i need to drill speed holes accross the rear window undery bit(dont know the technical name for this) and for the cross beam(i will be leave this bit realitivly hole free to keep up the strenght).

Plan for next week is to meet up with neil/wolfie to get the car welded up, it was going to happen this weekend but unfortunatly he has had some break problems on the trailor so hopefully that will be all sorted for next week *smiley*

i will try and get the progress pics up asap i cant find my cable for the phone atm *frown*.
Also has anyone got some pictures of there modified doors?? I have had a search but havent really found much as im weak at search as i cant spell lol.

pictures at last!

do you realise you chopped the bulkhead near on 2 years ago!
That has to be the slowest start to a turbo build ever

yes i do, lack of time and motorvation has led to not much being done, now i have more time and money from my new job i have started working on it again. plus neil as you are getting more done to yours i thought it would be rude not to myself.

abit more of an update spent alot of time trying to find a part for my angle grinder to chop the doors up with i was mightely pissed off when i couldnt find it so i drilled more holes instead. unfortunatly one of the holes messed up abit and i took a small chunk of metal off the exhaust tunnel when i bashed my knee on the sill, hopefully this can be welded back together with ease but due to location im not to sure as im a novice to this sort of thing.

this is from today

and this is from when i had a pop at the subframe

i have a few more bits to tidy up but its coming along nicely :)

edit i also forgot to add the areas i have cross hatched are places i have been thinking of cutting out what are your views on this? the doors seem to be okay but the inner wings im not to sure about as i dont want them there and use brace bars instead.

it doesnt take that long the subby took a few eve's to do, the measurement part takes the time getting a nice even distribution is what i have been after, on the cross member it was 7cm (51mm)-7cm(32mm)-4x7cm(51mm)-7cm(32mm)-6cm(51mm) so in easy way i measured to the centre of the member(2 1/4" easyest measurement i had) then measured 7cm intervals up then a 6cm at the end, centre punch then cut the holes :) the last one i messed up abit but im doing the other side later so i wont make the same mistake again :)
