i have just ordered a straight cut gearbox for my 1380 mini ( non turbo) i have looked at various threads, but could not find any answers. what would be the difference if I also fitted drop gears along with my gearbox, and what would happen if i did`nt fit them ?

i am running at 105 bhp, stage 5 head with webber 45, please tell me the difference i would achieve ?

Drop gears are the weaker link and the bit to replace first TBH.

Hi,
The S/C drops will last longer in a high torque application as they don't try to destroy the bearings on the idler gear.
However I've ran a 120 bhp /100 lbft 1380 on a standard box and drops for 10 years with no problems *wink*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

thanks for the advise guys, so really I did not need the straight cut gearbox *frown*

I did however need a new gearbox, so its not been a complete waste of time and money

Don't worry if you have already bought it. Look at it as an investment for the future.

i think it was stevie turbo that ran helical drops and straight cut box ,at a v high power , enough to break teeth off the straight cut gears , but he never had a prob with the drops .... has anybody actually broken teeth off the a+ helical drops ?

I have, I'll get some pics if I can remember where I put the blooming thing.

I've not yet stripped my old engine and box yet, but I'm pretty sure that it was the remains of a drop gear that came out of the sump.

Bearing were fine and are still in the car and going strong, probably should have changed them when I replaced the drops, LOL

By chance I pulled the engine and box a fortnight ago to change the final drive and checked the replacement drops at the same time and they look ok.
