When fitting different gearboxes, final drives or gear sets, it's easy to overlook the calibration of your speedo once the car's back on the road.

Although not an MOT item, its not a good idea to drive around with a speedo thats reading too low, for obvious reasons. And, it's bloody frustrating knowing that you're mileometer will also be inaccurate.

You can overcome this to an extent by using the speedo readings from a standard car which is following you and flashes its lights at 10, 20, 30 mph. By flashing, this will enable you to place a sticky dot on the glass of your speedo. Or, you could use a GPS to end up with the same result. Not very good though.

An even better fix is to send your speedo head to Speedy Cables (now in Swansea) to enable them to calibrate the unit properly.

They did a great return postal service on my 130mph 'S' Speedo, nice and efficient, within 7-10 days. The parts can be insured through the Post Office for a small fee so there's peace of mind.

You need to supply some data to Speedy Cables about your tyre circumference (by measuring the line on the ground made when rolling the car forward by one wheel revolution) and the number of revolutions your actual speedo cable makes for a given number of turns of one of your front wheels (by placing the car in gear and jacking one side off the ground).

Details of how to obtain the data needed and the company details can be found at :

Good luck.

Richard.

Ive used Speedycables in the past to make some speedo and accelerator cables.

ALWAYS a first class service, and quality product, for very very reasonable prices.

I wouldnt hesitate in reccomending them

9.85 @ 145mph
202mph standing mile
speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

Not sure on price, was a while ago, but I can recollect getting change out of £40, including the postage & insurance.

Best bet is to contact them for more up to date prices.

Richard
