Hi,

If you want a cheap and always present strobo on your engine there exist today power 1W (up to 15w) LEDs. I used a 1W one. Swithing it on for less than 1ms is enough to get a clear image of the reference. If you have a free output on your ECU (if you use an ECU :) ) it's likely a good investment as the worse thing with an ECU is to ignore what it's doing.

To give a reference a 10W LED is like a 70W buble. With the difference the light cone is 120 degres wide instead of 360 degres.

Megasquirt has three LEDs on the case.

The MS2/extra setup uses two of them to indicate the ignition events and I suspect the injection events ocurr at the same time.

The only problem is that I cannot count quick enough *happy*

I like this*happy* Im going to do it*happy* I have plenty spare outputs, infact i can set one up for Tacho and then divide that by two
*happy*

Excellent

Any links to the LEDs in question, save me searching*wink*

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

remember that you need to be a bit careful with these LED's as they can go into themal runaway fairly easily.

really they like to be powered by a constant current source (on dc anyway)

Joe, do you have a photo of your tool?

No there is no problem with DC or other. You have to cool them with a radiator, right, they are surface mounted and it's easy to place a piece of metal sheet between the LED and the PCB.

I bought mine here:

However ignition pulse / 2 may be too long even at 1000 RPM. I remember mine works at < 1ms

What i meant was, the tacho output is every ignition event, you only need the TDC ignition event, therefore dividing by two should give you the strobe of use, basicaly its every other ignition event

I understand but the pulse length matters. The tacho output usually reflects the dwell, which is >2ms. 2ms is too much to have a clear strobo image.

Code is easy enough to change.
