Here's the progress of my K build so far, still in early days but I seem to be making progress now, had a few hours in the machine shop this week apart from that just been doing odds and sods in my lunch break at work (with extremely limited tools..lol).

As you may see I made the schoolboy error of starting to take the valves out one day then leaving it a couple of weeks to do the rest...all the lettering is messed up lol..sshould make putting the cam buckets in fun *laughing*

This is the head sealing plate. It took a while to file, still needs a bit more work and importantly polish. :)

I couldn't think for the life of me how to sort the bottom plate out so, thought this was the easiest way. I still need to put the plates on a dividing head to put some holes in them to mount them to the back plate.

This is the build as of today (at lunch..lol). I managed to finish the machining on the bottom timing plate today so that can now be fitted. The crank pulley is in the mill just needs a few more skins off the teeth to sort the pitch out.

Looks good mate!!
Did you do all the filing by hand?
Planning on doing a similar conversion in the near future, may I ask how you lined up the holes for the cam seals?
Also what crank/ cam pulleys are you using?

Hmm not too sure about your way of cuttin out the ally. LOL Finished product looks the part though.
You got no acces to cnc milling machines or a bandsaw atleast?

Cheers Gav, it still looks a bit of a mess at the moment, hopefully i'll have the bottom pulley finished next week. It will look a bit more complete then.

Yeah all by hand...took a while.lol

To line up the seals its fairly simple.

1. Drill the holes for the plate. (they aren't symetrical, although the plate very nearly fits eaither way).
2. Turn a bar down to the same size as the cam bearings (24mm IIRC) with a point on the end.
3. Fit cam bearing caps, nip them up then tap the end of the bar and it marks the plate. *wink*

At work all I have acces to is a pillar drill and vice..lol

It only took half an hour or so to chain drill, and it could take that long to set the mill up for one cut so didn't see the point really especially as its not just a straight forward shape for a standard mill.

Like you say its the finished product that counts. :)

Ive got access to a mill and lathe to do the precision jobs, like making pulleys, adaptors etc.

Excuse the noob questions, but in the picture I have attached, I'm sure all green galleries are water, so I asume the red are oil? You seem to have made a few mods to the cyl deck, what have you done there? How you planning on routing the the oil feeds to and from the head? Will be investing in the SC build guide soon.
Cheers,
Greg

Im a noob myself, just learning as I go..lol

Blue is the water
Red oil feed
Green oil return

You can see a faint outline where the 2 oil drain holes (green) have been plugged and drilled. The right hand side of the pic you can also see a faint line where the blanking plate has been welded in to seal the head to the end plate.

After seeing some valvers at Avon it sparked my enthusiasm again so I decided to strike while the Irons hot. Lol

Looking good, I'm going to be taking the easy way out and giving John some of my hard earned pennies.

I really like your front plate, it's got to be even lighter than the ally ones Dave sells.

The bottom end is a turbo block bored to 1293, zetec undercrown oil jets, S rods, reground crank to suit rods, not sure on pistons yet till I measure the head chambers. More than likely accralite 18cc's (the most expensive bit of the build so far)!!

Im plugging the block next week, so should be able to get it over Rob walkers next time im passing by that way!

Anodising would look the nuts not sure how much it costs though?

Ive still got some countersinks to put in etc yet so i'll have a think how to finish them...hmmm

I was thinking of polishing them then laquering, but not too sure if this is sufficient to stop the oxidising?

if you get a few bits togeter anodising won't be that much,

I had a fuel rail and alloy rad anodised recently, and considering the rad was a PITA both bits were £30. its a bit of a price per batch situation, if you had about8-10 bits of stuff it probably would be about 40-50 quid, compared to 1 bit at around 25....

IMO well woth it though as it makes tha ally SOOOO much more sesistant to scratches and corosion.
