You just have to look at the US governments impressive statistics for the number of illterate people in their land ...... somthing around 70% of the population.

From my experience of Americans (note how corretly I didn't refer to them by a slang term) is that if you go into the cities and wealthier areas of the country you find their of a similar level of interlect to your average Brit .... the problem comes in that there are so many of them outside these areas. It obviously doesn't help that their media is so biased and censored.

I'm not taking the piss, please don't think I am. I find it shameful that such a wealthy nation allows such a situation to continue.

You only have to look at the differences in government response to two terrible disasters, 9-11 and New Orleans. Both where horrible, both showed massive loss of life .... one was almost forgotten in a week!!!!

I should point out I work for an American company, deal with American engineers everyday and some of our customers are based in the USA. 90% of them are clever people with a very near grasp of th english language!

But I think that similar results could be had in many countries.
