Would the idea of fitting four injectors to the top front of the block and injecting directly into the cylinders be a possible solution to the charge robbing problem?
The injectors would be protected by the piston at the ignition point and would have a good period of time to operate.
I am sure there are all sorts of reasons it can't be done but it is an idea I had and I need you guys to tell me if it's a non starter.

Dave

Good plan, but go google direct injection and look at the fuel pressure. 1500bar and up for some of them. The technology is way beyond the hobbyist at the moment

Bill, I have looked at direct injection and agree with you about the impracticality of it. But if the fuel was injected at the start of the induction stroke until a short way up the compression stroke the in cylinder pressure would be low enough for normal injectors at a pressure of say 4 - 5 bar. Am I missing something here?

That doesn't give much time to inject. Atomisation would suffer. But if you can find an injector that can take the heat and work out how to machine the head then it might work. But a K1100 head swap sounds a lot easier at this point.

But nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Bill, The injectors would be fitted into the front face of the block, not the head.
I would imagine they would be around 15 - 20 mm down from the deck face and inject at 90 degrees to the cylinder axis. It should not be too difficult to machine sucessfuly.
Do you think there may be enough time to inject? Is it going to be worthwhile doing the experiment?
I take your point about atomisation.
I cant use a K1100 head in the class I want to run the car in or I would.
Just trying to find a possible alternative to the siamese code.

I don't know if what you propose is possible (I have strong doubts) but if it is I think that the development and testing time and effort for such a system would be quite high. The siamese code is much more likely to be in a very stable state before such a setup and at a much lower cost also.

But that's my biased opinion.

Jean,
In no way am I trying to compete with your excellent work on the siamese code and I look forward to it's completion.
I was just thinking of an alternative that I could try using my own skills and abilities and not having to rely too much on others.
RogerM and others are you about, I would value your comments.
I am slowly convincing myself it might just work.

Dave

Dave,

I did not see that as you trying to compete with what I'm doing. And actually, I welcome any alternative to what is presently offered to Mini enthusiasts.

I'd be very interested to see this work. Let us know how it goes.

I like nice quiet girly Minis

Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

I am about but have to go to work so can't post in detail now, I will later.

The quick reply is no I don't think that is viable as a home brew set-up.

Jean's code is however and that wi;; be around us soon.

If I were you I'd put some effort into a manifold design to use with Jean's code.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...
