Heres a couple of videos of my port injected turbo. They all have the title "1293 Turbo Mini..........."

http://www.youtube.com/user/OB1akaDOZ

I have 4 injectors mounted approximately 50mm from gasket face on head. I built it 10 years ago and it's been in the car for more than 8 without a gearbox or engine blow up since. I've had a porous leak in the head fixed (from me over porting) and had to replace a seized exh valve, thats it.

The engine usually runs 11-12psi (controlled by absolute pressure) but I have run it up to 15psi on a track day (not in videos though) and had a 1/2sec slower lap time due to traction issues. It has a front mount intercooler and the intake temp on a 32degC day with 12psi boost is no more than 40degC.

During the Dyno run (see video) the engine was limited to 10psi boost and the operator didn't have the right settings, nor a cooling fan and the power at the wheels was 94~. Reports on the day reckoned a 10% lower reading but I don't care. I'm pretty certain from other legal testing that it's around 160hp at the fly, you have a look at the wakefield vs WRX video and judge yourself.

I built the engine/set-up as an engineering exercise after many experts said it couldn't be done. Even the owner of Motec (the ECU of choice) told me I wouldn't get the EFI to work on a siamesed port!

I have drilled 2 x 5/16" holes next to the booster mounting on the drivers side for the remote oil filter, otherwise there are no additional cut panels or drilled holes for anything associated with the turbo mod. If I removed the turbo set-up it would look standard.

The only problem I have is the idle wanders and often stalls. I can fix this by running a throttle by-pass idle control or change the tuning MAP but can't be bothered.

It's the most reliable car I've got, I have never had a problem to start the car and often go to supersprint meetings having not started it for weeks, I just change the oil the night before, fill it up with fuel, put in a battery and on the trailer she goes!

Go the A-series

I'm sure we would love to see some pictures of the engine.

So how do you control the injectors? Batch, sequential, timed???How many injectors do you use?

Unfortunately I don't have any digital photos atm, but I'm sure there are others members who may be able to help out that were at the dyno day.

You can't see the injectors unless I remove turbo as they are underneath. As I said, there are 4 and they are fired sequentially.

I want to run an NA motor with port injection and do a back to back comparo on a Dyno with a weber, most likely a 1380-1400 or something similar.

Cheers Grant,

I have got a digital camera but I don't have hardly any digital photos of my car in general and none of the actual engine. I found some of the printed photos I have the other night and hope to scan some in to show the injectors without the turbo in the way.

I am taking the motor out early next year and moving some of the components to get better cooling. I'll be looking at adding heat shielding for the fuel lines etc too as the tank gets warm on track from the fuel recirculating past the exhaust as you can see in the last pic.

In the top photo is my Dad and my Cousin (in law) Izzy, I am in the passenger seat. Izzy has a V8 commodore NA that does 10.8 at 123mph down the 1/4 mile and works on top fuelers in his spare time! People say mini's are hard to work on but with his V8 we have to instal each header pipe individually cause they don't fit easily. He doesn't like EFI either, who can argue when he's doing a 10.8 though!

Cheers and thanks for posting pics, much appreciated

Daniel

that is well sexy with the turbo raised up, have you just mounted the exhaust manifold upside down to do that?
very nice indeedy

Forget the turbo instal .... look at that steady bar!!!!!! Now that is lateral thinking for you, and very well done at that!

It's certainly a nice install although I am still to be convinced personally that this form of injection an A-series is the way to do it. Can not fault the workmanship in this car though!

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

A massive benefit of mounting the turbo there.....heat rises *wink*

A much cooler intake manifold...

Would love to see better pics of the inlet though ??

Roger - I'm pretty sure the steady bar is standard issue on them 'upside-down' minis...

Steady bar is std, apart from chrome. A straight one won't hit the intake either, it's further off than it looks. I thought you guys were refering to the one I made for under the thermostat housing but it's not shown...

The exhaust manifold is std metro and you are all correct, it is just reversed. The only problem is the hot bonnet, if I had a dollar for every time someone has touched the blisters thinking they are rust, I'd have enough to buy a decent heat shield LOL.

I haven't pulled the engine out yet, no point taking pics till then.

Cheers
