Finally a gearbox update!

My first attempt at softening the gears failed, this time they went lovely and crusty!

Now all machined out ready for the new splined centre.

Making use of BMC's mandrel, to machine the pinion down. *happy*

The two parts to be pressed together, and then welded.

I also had to bore it out slightly to clear the pinion.

Checking fitment on new shaft.

Looking good, though the possibility of a straightforward conversion went out the window a while ago!

Thanks for the comments!

Yeah its taking alot more thinking, and modifying than I originally thought, but its a bloody mission trying to keep things simple, compact, strong and affordable. *oh well*

Thats the mainshaft completely finished now tough. We have the jigs near enough made up to get gear spaced correctly. The next job is the boring of the layshaft...which im not looking forward to!

I made up some tooling to get the layshaft bearings the right distance away from the mainshaft. Should do the job nicely.

Ah yeah those gears are from the bike gearbox. They were the only 2 that were flat, so I have the use them to work out the spacing.

Im having to get some new gears made up for the drops.

it makes me wonder, but did the guy in australia that got it working have to go through this much trouble? Was there any proof that he had it working?

On another note matty, top work! keep up the great effort....

Thanks for the comments. :)

Ive done some more machining today. This is the bar I am going to use to clock off, to make sure the new bores are exactly parallel....in theory!

Nice work this is one for the record books!
Is that two part hub going to be strong enough welded? If not you could always dowel pin it.

Haha ive had it sussed in my head for ages, but trying to find a suitable machine and tooling to do the line boring has been the problem. I was going my mates lathe, but it won't be available for a while now so im having to look elsewhere. We have a bridgeport mill at work, but its always being used during the day and I reckon I'll need a good 5 or 6 hours to get everything set up and machined.

TBH im getting impatient now, and want to make some serious progress on it. lol

All will become clear very soon. *wink*

It should be fine, although welding it was my last option. Its only for driving reverse, so no significant power going through it. *wink*
