I don't think BMC ever imagined that the cain would have to take over 200 bananas and 150+ torque. Personally I'd prefer a gear than a chan for drive.

Looking good Matt.

It turns out I can't use standard input gears toegther so looks like its going to be some custom ones. Ive been thinking about running the engine backwards to avoid the extra gear, the only major problem I can think of is the direction of the oil pump, which I can't see an easy solution to?

Have not visited this site in a long time, found this thread again and read the whole thing from start to finish. Amazing work you are doing.

Maybe you could eliminate the idler by using a chain. BMC competitions department tried it, they experimented with chain drive to eliminate the idler gear. There is a picture on the Mk1performanceconversions site at

Thanks for the comments. I haven't made much progress due to staying away with work. But I cracked on with a few things this evening. Im on to the wiring again.

Ive got a diagram for my EFI, one for the fuse box, one for my digidash, the original mini wiring diagram, and a mk1 diagram to combine together. lol

After 6 weeks of waiting the machine shop still aren't finished with my gearbox parts, so I still can't machine out the bearing locations. *oh well*

Ecu and wiper motor mounted and loom in place.

Its from car builders solutions. It just a universal fuse box, but if you look at the link, it comes ready to be installed with a very simple diagram to follow. The only downside is that you'll have to make a completely new loom to install it, which ive spent the last week doing.

Yep the main power feed comes off the fuse box then the switch does the jigery pokery to switch the speeds.

Here are my new light weight shocks mounts (with patent *hehe!* ). The major weight saving on them is something you can't see in the pictures. *wink*

Yep I drilled out the shaft. :) I was going to replace it with a tube but I thought it would be easier just to drill out on the lathe.

Cheers Rich, im aiming for under 500kgs, but if you think yours is 490ish I have no hope! lol

clubbie nl - Its a good job I don't value your opinion then. And it probably means you disapprove of the structural integrity of most of the quickest cars on here!

Do you have a cage mate? If not then sub 500 should be possible? I dont have the weight of a turbo, intercooler and plenum so it's a bit easier lol

I have a rear cage fitted. Its the suspension (unsprung weight) thats needs the most attention on mine. I'll be about 20kgs down from last year from my calcs, so im guessing its around 530kgs now. *oh well*

Are you running light weight radius arms or front suspension arms?
