I hate this stage in a build, feels like I spend hours with the grinder but doesn't feel like any progress, parts scattered everywhere with little room to work! *oh well*

Well Ive spent the day creaming all over it, so hopefully that should be the bodywork done so I can get on with building it back up and finishing off the box.

It used to be OEW but ive now gone for another colour that is slightly creamier. :)

I did indeed, after stripping the whole top end down, I realised that all it was, was the reed valves on top of the compressor had drawn in paint and with the heat of the compressor it had cured and partially seald them up. So a relatively easy fix in the end.

I used 2k to paint it. Used the fast hardner mixed 2:3 ratio (2 parts paint 3 hardner) to 200ml of paint gives you 500ml when mixed. Ive used just under 1L to paint the underside of floor, top side of the floor, C pillars, parcel shelf, rear bench, both sides of the bulkhead and the front window surround. So it goes a long way.

I also used anti bloom thinners.

Last week when I painted the underside, I used a small space heater and heated the panel slightly with a heat gun before paint. Then in between coats I went over the panel with the heat gun from about 2ft away, to keep some heat in it.

Yesterday it was near 20 degrees here, so I didn't use any additional heat, if anything I was having to add more thinners to the paint to get it to wet out properly, as it was starting to go orange peely, A few VERY wet coats sorted that out though. :)

When left out in the sun, the paint was touch dry within the hour. In the cold more like 12-24hours.

Hey Matt,

Thanks for coming back to me so quick, I didn't think you could use space heaters with 2K Because of the fumes ? if i can get those sort of results on mine from my garage and a space heater i will be dead chuffed ! *smiley*

Just be careful that you don't fuck your space heater by it drawing the overspray through it. Mate of mine fucked his this way.

Ah yeah only use the heater before painting, then switch it off whilst painting.

Also make sure you're compressor is outside the garage, mine drew in paint form the air and blocked the intake valve.

Afternoon gents, cheers for your comments, oh wicked, so i dont need to worry to much about having to bake it like in a propper oven, as long as i can get heat on it before and after, by which then the fumes should have settled..... ? suppose i can just place the space heater in the door opening.

Sorry to hijack your thread with my questions Matt. :)

No worries, the main thing is to make sure is its a dry day (no moisture in the air). No need to bake it on really, I'd recommend using the fast acting hardner though.

It turns out I can't use standard input gears toegther so looks like its going to be some custom ones. Ive been thinking about running the engine backwards to avoid the extra gear, the only major problem I can think of is the direction of the oil pump, which I can't see an easy solution to?

Have not visited this site in a long time, found this thread again and read the whole thing from start to finish. Amazing work you are doing.

Maybe you could eliminate the idler by using a chain. BMC competitions department tried it, they experimented with chain drive to eliminate the idler gear. There is a picture on the Mk1performanceconversions site at

I must of missed this post! *oh well*

Thanks for your comments. I have looked at going down the chain drive route, but for what im doing it would still require some custom sprockets and chain being made up so no more real benefit over some custom gears. *oh well*

Ive finished the stripping, cleaning and painting of all of the oily parts, so I can now get on with putting the rest of it back together and finish the box off.

What do you think of the new wheels? Lol
