Nice work Matt, how about enlarging the drive shaft holes for the pot joints while you are at it. Doesn't look like there is much more to loose.

How about getting some strenght back by "folding" the sides of the big square holes you made (as the pot joint holes) ?

How about replacing the front member of the subframe with a suitably sized tube ? (as in lighter obviously)

George - im still undecided about the driveshaft holes, as I can't remember the last time I took a complete driveshaft out, so not sure if it would be any benefit (well apart from a bit more weight lost I suppose).

Advantage - That was my original plan to replace the front section, but then I realised that lots of things bolt to it so making it out of tube would make it difficult to drill and mount stuff. Ideally I would like to swage some of the circular holes, but im still looking to see if its possible to swage steel that thick without specialist tools...has anyone tried it?

adrian - I just used some hole saws, 1mm cutting discs, carbide burrs, files, and grinding discs.

Im going to wire brush it all down, but im still trying to decide how to paint it. I can't be arsed to go down the powder coat route. So its either brush paint, rattle tin, or maybe 2k? what are people thoughts *oh well*

Fair enough matt, i have to say i like the slots instead of just holes. As for paint, i had thought hammerite, seems one of the most suitable and easily available.

=> big fookin' hammer and a big piece of metal with a proper radius on the other side ?

Ho, or a modded vice ?

Where is Paul W when we need him ?

Might be a bit unwieldy but if you made some formers you could easilly flange the holes using a fly press

Cheers guys, will have another look at it.

Ive rolled the shell on its side today and started cutting off uneeded brackets. Just the seat mounts to sort, then I can get some paint on it.

My latest weight reduction too. *happy*

You obviously have too much time on your hands Matt as well as weight obsession !

I would never have thought of that in a million years

Dave - not to much time on my hands just waiting for some paint to dry, and didn't want to stand there watching it, as it would never dry! *wink*

Andy - plenty more ridiculous weight savings coming up. lol

To be honest alot more can come off the rod, an ally one would more than likely be fine with a steel pin.

Wiper wheel boxes are the next on the list. :)

Well the gearbox is all welded up, it came out better than I expected. Just lots of machining to do now!

Nice !

I assume people who did the welding did it properly with as less heat warp as possible but are you gonna use one of the standard shaft line in standart size bearing and if so did you check if they are dragging a little or not ?

I would love for that to be my welding, but unfortunately it isn't.

The guy that welded it, preheated the whole box before welding. He says he's done plenty of gearboxes and castings before and its always helped minimise distortion. My welder would never have enough current to weld metal that thick, the guy that did it, said it took alot of preheating and alot of current to get a good weld.

I'll be doing some inpections on it tomorrow to see how/if things have moved...fingers crossed.
