Looking good Mike! Good to see you were able to use the oil drain bits. The manifold is a genuine mirage one, i bought it from them 2 years ago. I had some trouble with it as well.

Bet you can't wait to fire it up!

When me and my dad made my manifold, we also found that the inlet and the exhaust flanges were a much different thickness. We took teh spacer washers (had some spare) cut them in half and welded half onto another washer so on half of the spacer it was double thickness if that makes sense?

Yeah, thanks for those bits Adam, saved me a lot of time :) and thats okay, I got it to fit in the end, I just can't get a spanner of any sort on two of the nuts..

Yeah, hopefully it'll be done by weds before I go on holiday, I just hope it works... :/

As for the different sized flanges, I just took a hacksaw to the inlet flanges to get the majority off, then filed them flat.

Feels like I'm nearing the end now *happy*

First point of call was the clutch, I re-bled it, which didn't make any difference, and then realised I have no idea what to do to adjust the clutch, so just took them from one extreme to another, which had no effect what so ever. I don't know if it's possible but can you get shorter push rods? it doesnt look like the arm is travelling far enough.

Then i set to work on the fuel pump, made sure it worked, then plumbed it in, along with the fuel filter and the return line. Got it all wired up as well, just waiting for my inertia switch to turn up to put in-line, and an outlet for the pump.

Had the battery on charge all day, so plugged it in at this point, primed the pump, and turned it over, and got oil pressure! got to 80-90 odd, which is much better than the 30-40 of the old engine...

As I had a bit of juice left in the battery I decided to do a compression test, and got about 150 on all four *happy* so bar the clutch its looking good for starting :)

Also, fixed the clutch! Whilst rumaging around for the bits for the interior found a longer clutch arm, so slotted that in and now the clutch feels like it's doing something.


So it's looking good to actually work *tongue* (touch wood...)

Only half the parts came today, so got the fuel pump in and the fuel pressure set up; pretty impressed with the £10 gauge I got off eBay *tongue*


Also finished the wiring for the megajolt limiter and loom, so got that installed.

With the fuel and ignition supposedly sorted, we then strapped the air filter to the plenum, and tried to run it. Whacked in the new set of plugs and turned it over, got the pump, got oil pressure but it didn't start.

We checked the leads were good and the plug gaps and that they were all sparking, checked fuel was definitely getting to the carb, gave it another go, but still nothing..

So as a last hope, popped the top off the carb, dropped some fuel in, and got a splutter when we turned it over, so I think the fuel either isn't getting into the float chamber, or out the jet. So it looks like carb out to investigate...

So with everything I need to get it to run (thanks Oli for sending the hoses so quickly) I've been trying to get it started.

Started with some problems with the carb, wasn't letting fuel into the engine, but was getting to the float bowl. Took it off and had a look at the needle valve etc, took it apart and cleaned it and put it back in, still no bang.

This is when I checked the spark again and it was weak/none existent, turns out it is probably the coil pack.

Engine still wasn't starting, even though there is a spark (although a little one) but after lots of cranking we took the plugs out and they were dry as a bone. Took the carb off again and found the piston wasn't lifting, disassembled it and the piston wasn't lifting. Took it apart, cleaned it, lubricated everything, put it back on and still nothing.

I have a coil pack on order, hopefully that'll help things, but it's just getting frustrating...

Parents want the car off the drive though so are trying to persuade me to send it to a garage, soo had a look around, turns out there are no mini specialists within an hour and a half of me, so my best option seems to be to send it to slark, but I want to try a coil pack and see how that goes.

Small update, the car is going to slark on thursday for them to get it started, get it mapped and fueled etc.

I'm still waiting on the intercooler i bought, but have been tinkering with things; got the hoses properly in position to fit the intercooler, having a bit of a clearance issue with the bonnet, but I should be able to just raise it at the back until I can re-arrange the hoses a tad.

Havn't managed to get it running either.

Just need to replace that one blue hose with a black one *tongue*

By the way, that 90 degr hose at far right looks pretty kinked..?

It's not a 90 deg, its a 45, and it is kinked, but it's because the intercooler pictured isn't the one i'm going to fit, and sits a lot higher, which means that its kinked because of the angle it has to sit at.

You can see in the picture above with the hoses roughly where the new intercooler will be that it sorts itself out

So a pretty crap day in all:

Car got to slark yesterday, to start work on it today. He managed to get it running, but really roughly, turns out the cam timing was out by one tooth. So spent most of the day swapping that over.

Got it all back together, but it still sounds really rough, struggling to to idle and massive unbalanced, judging by the way it was shaking.

Then play way bought to an end as we heard a grinding/scraping noise coming from the flywheel end. Turned the car off immediately. Neil got his camera-on-a-stick out and had a nosey around the insides but couldn't see anything. So we started it up, the noise had gone, but we tried the clutch and as soon as any pressure was put on it, it stopped the engine.

Neil did a bit more playing, concluded the crank end float was more than expected, but that it could be drop gears. Seems like the only thing to do is take the bastard out and see what's gone wrong, which is a right kick in the balls as I really could do with the car for next week.

So either going to see what we can find tomorrow, or just trailer it back and take it out.

OMG

I saw this at slark today! I was there to drop my head off! He was just finishing up fitting the cossie (I think) intercooler when we were there!

Sorry to hear about your issues :( Seems like mine wasn't the only one that decided to play up when it met Neil :( Bad times mate, time to fix it mate

Yeah, that was mine Craig, I arrived just after he'd done that *tongue*

After speaking to a few petrol-headed relatives it seems like its either clutch or thrust related. So I'll see if I can get the wok off tomoroow and see anything wrong with the clutch/flywheel, or if there are any witness marks anywhere from that scraping.

Just wish I'd found this out earlier...
