would be seriously intrested if it was a conversion jsut for a standard gearset. looks intresting. would be fun and even more so if flat shifting could be sroted easy enough. touring car style shifter nearly touching steering wheel driving postion

Would this be too quick for the syncro's? Wouln't fancy crunching it into every gear.
If so it would prob be more suitable to a dog box.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

I like the idea, but I'd have to have one in my road car if I was going to put one in the hillclimber.

After 20 years of driving with an H-pattern, it may take a bit of getting used to, especially when a tricky moment arises.

Easy for people doing lap after lap of a circuit, but 30 seconds up a hill wouldn't be enough time to get it in my head.

1st to provide proof of a running Bimmy Conversion!

Brisbane ,Australia

Just looks like hes used a motorbike type selector drum & spring assy (obviously modified what-ever was needed) & etc etc etc

good job by the looks so i`m not knocking it,,, just seems a reasonable way to achieve a simple quick-shift

well done & hope it all works out good for you,,, i`d be keen to try one but i already have a sequential 6-speed *smiley*

Nice, but of very limited use on a standard H-gate though?

Are we thinking that the shift lever is providing the 'signal' to the shift system, rather than being the prime mover of the synchro/dog clutch? I just can't tell from the video.

If so, then it'll need motive power from an oil pump or the battery, both of which have pros and cons.

And if anyone is wondering how the motorbike shift drums work, then it here are some links. It is a really cool system, although mechanical (direct acting) systems are rarely used with synchros.

Pictures will paint a thousand words, but there is nothing like having a motorbike gearbox in pieces in front of you and watching the shif drum do its thing.

If this thing can be made for less than 500 quid, I think someone will sell a LOT of them!

I was sat bored in class at college yesterday morning. I remembered this thread. I had a what if moment.

So what if.

I don`t think you would need anything in the gearbox at all.

Its only one rod that moves. Rotates. Moves backwards and forwards.

Could you not have a double acting ratchet. attached to a bevel gear.

Then you could have like a solid bit of round ally bar quite big though mind! with a bevel gear cut in one end.

On the other end of the drum you could have a track to facilitate the guiding of a pin around a point in the center of the drum. This would facilitate the rotation of the rod.

Then down the side of the drum you could have another track again guiding a pin. attached eventually to the gear shaft. This could facilitate pulling the gear rod back and pushing it forward.

Clutch would still need some work though. But. you could mount two micro-switches on either side of the gear leaver with little levers that are pivoted at the top of the gear stick. when the switch is down activate somehow an electric/hydraulic mechanism to activate the clutch.

I`m sure iv`e seen disability cars on manual gearboxes with a clutch system on a trigger on the gear stick. This might be the best place to look. But iv`e never really put hydraulic and anything fast acting together in the same thought process.

Sounds great Sam - go and make it. *smiley*

Seriously - I too think this could be made to 'work' relativly easilly on the rod alone, but not as quickly or efficiently as a drum moving some shift forks.

I'm still wondering if this is a mechanical, or electric / hydraulic shift however...

As far as I know Jack Knight developed an external sequential shift mechanism (at least it's in some cataloque of them). I would guess similar to this one: http://www.ikeya-f.co.jp/en/product_notice...en_shifter.html

Looking at it this way; it doesn't matter that much, where you install a sequential gear selection - in- or outside the gearbox (inside is probably stronger & faster I'd guess, though). as long as it works... And has a reverse *hehe!*
