as standard there is a relief valve there, it vets at about 10 psi so if you want to run more boost it needs blocking up.

The two centre guides also sit about 5mm lower on the top side of the head too! Very odd.....

This might be because of extreme heat. The guides sink because of it. I'd have the valve guide area of the head checked for size before fitting new ones.

Cheers V.

Had the head checked today, all seemed OK on the valve guide bores. had the two new guides fitted and reamed to size.

I know I should fit a full new set, but I wanted it done ASAP so I can get her running this weekend, and the guy wanted over 100quid to fit and ream all 4!!! plus the current ones were new about 3000 miles ago anyway. The head doesn't have to do much more service anyway, I just want to use it a few more months whilst I build my turbo motor.

In other good news today, I picked up this lovely set of blue point (snap-on) Ratchet spanners for 25 notes from a mate who was desperate for cash :)

Bargain for the spanners. Shame they are metric!

tiz a shame they're metric really, but at that price, I wasn't going to turn then down! My dailly is entirely metric anyway, and seems to break just as often as the Mini!

No more spanners Ben, these were a 1 off.

VR sensor bracket and Trigger wheel ordered and paid for from Tom.

Just need to find a decent GT17 at a sensible price now! Anyone got a shafted one they fancy selling me for rebuild?

Those spanners were certainly a bargain, although Blue Point stuff isn't always as expensive as you think sometimes. Good tools though. Beware of buying any Snap-on "Eurotools", not so great from what I have seen, but some sellers on ebay will conveniently not mention that they are Eurotools.

Cheers Tom I'll keep my eyes open for those Eurotools don't want fobbing off especially if paying Snap-on money.

I've bought some US Tools Imperial ratchet spanners today will have to see what the quality is like.

OK, so I found a GT17 on ebay earlier, at £42 when I found it. Decided I was going to bid.

It looks tidy enough, and the seller has good feedback, claims it was rebuult around 1000 miles ago, and came off a saab that got written off. no play in the shaft.

Was prepared to spend up to £140 or so, but having had a few beers, got pissed off when I was outbid, so decided I had to win it!

£181 later and I've got myself a GT17 :)

Just need a manifold now....

Well Joe, providing there's no play in the shaft it should be OK. I'll only be running lowish boost for a while to get things all settled in and working properly. so I guess it should do fine for that. if it does run into trouble, I'll send it to CR turbo's for a refresh.

Custard, thanks for the heads up on the turbo *tongue* I told you it would go for way more than £100 didn't I!

Fat boy, I've got a set of imperial ones as well. You can't buy them but I'll re-locate them to the garage if you want?

Ebay is a bit like a drug to me sadly.....

I get so wrapped up in the bidding war that I sometimes forget about paying a sensible price for something, and it's all about winning.

Glad i haven’t got that addiction yet.. i already spend enough cash!

how much does it cost to get one of these rebuilt or can it be done yourself??

rebuild kits can be found for £60ish on ebay, or if you send it to CR turbos they will do a full rebuild on it for £225. Not knowing what I'm doing, or exactly what I'm looking for, I'd be inclined to get CR to look at it before attempting anything.

Hopefully this one will be OK though :)

You wanting to ditch the laggy T3?

don’t get that much lag tbh - but a GT17 has been on the cards for a while, more efficient etc.

Wont get done this year tho.

yea, I had a toss up between starting it off on a T3, or just going GT17 straight away. Decided as I'm going to so much trouble building the bottom end properly and everything, I may as well take my time and go GT17 straight away.

If i didn't already have a decent engine I'd be in much more of a rush!
